rns510 update - rubbed out maps.

    Hi all,

Perhaps unwisely I decided to upgrade my RNS510 to the 2660/2664 etc firmware update.

Burned a DVD. Recognised and all went through. Said SWL success.

Ejected DVD. Started up the system.

Radio stations intact, iPod music resumed at last play, SD Card OK.

Maps.... nothing... addresses seem to be present, but there are no maps at all.

I thought the update didn't touch the maps, but they're seemingly wiped.

Tried resetting by pressing the <> and eject and speaker key.

    Same... no maps.

Anyone know where to get them back? DVD? Dealer?

I should say that I didn't get the time display option; and the only thing that seemed to have changed was the OPS display that had the grey zones displayed.

Should probably have just let it be.

    That'll teach me...

Also the steering wheel buttons appear to have stopped working, but the ignition wasn't on, so I'm not 100% sure about that yet.

Come and see me on the weekend and I should be able to help you resolve the issues.

Go for a drive and the maps will be there. This is a problem with some headunits not storing the last known location.

And the ignition has to be on for the buttons to work.

    Thanks guys.

I installed it a second time yesterday and left it to do its thing once more.

Disc was ejected when I got back. Pulled it out and it restarted.

The map page was still blank.

I entered a location and decided to choose a point via GPS. And that's where I saw that my car was actually in the Indian ocean just off the Kimberley's!

Being in the garage it didn't know any better I guess.

So I took it out for a drive. Nothing for a while so I pulled over. Chose HOME to guide to; and it said no route available....

Kept driving for a while and got the map up but the car was heading in sideways and backwards drifts. The MFD said "Offroad". I was happy the maps were there but it still seemed borked with the directionality though the compass was working.

I tried entering a new destination HOME again. And it calculated the route. I drove around a bit more and the movements of the car and rotation of the map started matching the car's actual movements.

Just wondering now though, should I have been given a map disc by the dealer? There isn't one in the car dossier thing they give you.

But thanks again to both of you; awesome cars and awesome people

The buttons work too I found. Not only that but the star button, which did nothing before now is equivalent to the info button on the headunit. So I'm happy with that.

The loss of memory of the map was bizarre. I mean before I upgraded I unplugged both the SD card and the iPod in the MDI just in case.

When I replugged the iPod in, the music played from the exact point I'd left it! Same for the SD card. So despite the success it was baffling that the maps were seemingly gone....

Scary, but I'm pleased that I have the new functionality. Thanks for sharing

In a nutshell - yes. I've posted on this elsewhere on forum, but the maps license is a single user EULA, so if you don't have the maps in their case, you don't have a license to use the maps.

Some dealers I suspect try and save $ by re-using a single disc, as it means they don't have to buy a map DVD for each RNS510. When you purchase a VW with a factory fitted RNS510 here in Australia it comes with the license for Australian maps INCLUDED in the price of the RNS510. That means (under the terms of the license) you should be given the disc as proof of license ownership.

There's another unexpected thing or two...

I haven't got the time display with the unit off and no menu settings that I can see to enable or disable it... maybe I'm missing it...

And more welcome than that is that I can use the navigation menu to enter destinations etc while the car is in motion.

This is a major annoyance in my wife's Toyota which shuts the passenger out from entering anything into the unit and you have to wait till a red light etc.

Is the VW behaviour standard? ie allows entering with car in motion?

THere is an option to turn on the time display somewhere, I'll have a look tomorrow. The destination entry while moving is settable on or off with VAGCOM.
