Using the VDU to watch a video whilst driving would be one of the more stupid things to do.

Basically if you ask you will find that it is only intended to be used for Navigation ( then you should listen, not look )for instructions,

For a reversing camera or as in the case of garbo trucks who use them as a safety device.

They wouldnt be hoofing along at 100kph and watching it either.

One moron on a Caravan forum thought it would be good to be able to watch a movie because he thought the roads were boring.

He certainly got some interesting and down to earth replies. LOL

Dont think a cop would differentiate between a built in one or an aftermarket one if you are caught watching a video on either.

If you are going to post the legal regulations, quote them in full, Not the just the bits that suit as it can twist the meaning completely without the full text.

Agreed wholeheartedly. My post was only intending to point out a section of the road rules which I find to be a bit more ambiguous.

Rightly so. And just to be clear - I am absolutely not in any way suggesting that the driver should be watching a video while driving. I was just wanting to gauge reactions and get opinions on what people thought of using VIM for the purposes of say, keeping children in the back seat entertained.

Respectfully, I don't think I've cut out any bits that are relevant - if you think I have, please feel free to let me know and I'll amend my quotes. I just wanted to keep my post no longer than a short epic... Road Rule 299 is actually quite long, with exceptions pertaining to buses, emergency vehicles, motorcycles etc and 'offence provisions' which simply aren't relevant or do not apply here. Quoting the full text of Road Rule 299 for three states plus the national road rules would only make my previous post even longer than it already is, without actually contributing anything further.

    r.
Unfortunately if Mr Plod picks you up with VIM going, saying its for the kids in the back may not work as the rule says it should not be visible by the driver.

Not that it is visible but "please sir I wasnt watching it".

Like some I have seen that want an Ipad mount so they can see it For Navigation yes but the rest no.

For about $129 you can buy a pair of screens that hang on the back of the headrests and the kids can watch without you having to see it or even adjust things on the screen if they arent happy.

Some of the things that cause accidents are changing CD's, or DVD's rejigging the GPS or eating breakfast (LOL) etc whilst moving.

The abbreviated bits I meant where you quote parts of a section like 2 i or 3 4 6.

Would be interesting to know what all is in each section.

Or a link to the relevant rules would be good as I havent read them for a while.

Some parts of road rules do contradict themselves but there is only one place to get the correct version.

    Off the Law.

The one thing I cant stand is drivers who have to turn and look at the person they are talking to.

Cant they watch the road and talk without having to eyeball the passengers.

I have a friend who I hated travelling with who would even turn around and look at a back seat passenger when talking to them.

After he nearly rearended a parked truck I no longer travel with him, even just down to the shops.

But that's the thing though - aside from NSW, the national, Vic and SA road rules all say that the rule 299(1) does not apply if the VDU is a part of a driver's aid and an integrated part of the vehicle design. The wording of the NSW road rules state that the rule applies unless the VDU is actively being used as a driver's aid.

    ...or texting/tweeting/facebooking. Inattention, IOW.

    Fixed.

My original post already includes links to each of the road rules, either to the PDF (national, SA) or the exact rule (VIC, NSW) where possible:

Those road rules (except for the national rules, which are non-binding) as quoted ARE the law, in their respective states.

"Actively" being used as a driver's aid. I think that says it all, if you're caught watching the dvd, then you get fine one way or the other, the other would be driving without the due care.

It'd very stupid if the driver was watching the dvd while driving, I hope that everyone on here wants/has that feature only because of the passengers. The last think I want, is someone violate my car just because he/she was watching the dvd while driving.

What I meant was that as they are open to individual interpretation the people to ask are the people who enforce them.

Possibly you may still get individual officers interpret them differently.

All I can say is I wouldnt like to have to argue from the position of being stopped whilst playing something other than navigation on my VDU.

Whether I was watching it or it was on for the kids.

As I said buy a pair of screens for the back.

I totally agree but as in previous post if the VDU is visible from the drivers seat and it has something other than navi on it, you could be described as "Able to watch it".
Therefore you would be arguing from a bad position if Mr Plod catches you.

I have it enabled and have played Concert DVD's when travelling.

HOWEVER I then change it back to the map screen so can listen without the video part.

Seems reasonably sensible I thought, no different to playing it from the HDD.

Just stick some cardboard perpendicular to the right side of the screen so it blocks it from your view.

    /slightly sarcastic
