Thanks Jayse, that pic does the goods.. it's the same relative location as when fitted to a Golf (rear centre of the roof).

Thanks also JB - I figure that with the dead reckoning wheel sensors and accelerometers, it's probably not that essential to get a brilliant GPS signal. At work we set some tracking gear up on transcontinental trains, and the GPS dropped out occasionally (tunnels, dead spots, etc), the accelerometers kept the position accurate when we reviewed the data. RNS-510 probably works the same way..

    Now, decisions, decisions...

I have just picked up my 2006 passat v6 and am loving it, i was thinking of a sat nav unit and did the usual searching and have come across this forum. i hav also uncovered a sat nav unit from a mob in melbourne who call themselves Dig Options, has any one used/seen/installed one of these units? from the explanation on ebay it seems to be all tested etc to work but this is easy to do in writing, would like to get some confirmation of this before proceeding.

    Thanks in advance

Another quick general question - if RNS-510 is retro fitted, does it then do the visual display for the parking sensors or do they stay audio only?

If your car is built & supplied with the RCD510 unit (with the visual display), yes, it will have the proper CAN Gateway to do this - if not, you would have to update other parts.

    Hi Everyone,

We are in the process of purchasing a R36 Wagon under a lease plan and to minimise the Luxury Lease Tax we are trying to keep the purchase price down. We are interested in purchasing the Sat Nav to be fitted by the dealer afterwards.

Do they include the reverse camera with the fitting or is that only with the factory fitted unit?
Does the GPS antenna sit in the dash somewhere or do they have to drill holes and fit it to the roof as in the previous photo?

At the moment we are using a Uniden windscreen mount unit located on the RHS of the windscreen and I find it great. But I believe the 12V Outlet in the R36 is either under the centre console armrest or under the slide - is this correct?
It will be annoying running the power cable to the windscreen from the centre console so we thought stuff it we will get the Sat Nav unit. But could just wire it into the fuse box if needed.

    Decisions, Decisions!!

12v cigarette style socket is in front of the shifter and below the climate controls.

In the sedan, the antenna is inside the roof lining at the top of the rear window. Not sure about the wagon.

AFAIK, the reverse camera is only a factory option - most dealers don't want to even try fitting it.

Oh, and the LCT is incorporated into the RRP of the car...

    Hi Rocket36,

Thanks for the reply. I take it the outlet is under a cover as I have been looking for photo's on the net and all I can see is a curved piece in that area. I take it there is the ash tray / outlet under there.

Its hard to justify the $3000 for the GPS when a $250 unit that is mounted near your front view can do the same.

Luxury Non-deductible is to do with Notated Leasing over the $57### value. I still have to pay the Luxury Tax I believe.

Yup - it's under that curved cover...

I had the same thoughts as you on the stupid amounts car makers charge for integrated sat nav that's almost always inferior to TomTom. So I had a TomTom got free two years ago.

But I didn't order my R36, I bought the one on the showroom floor so had no choice about the sunroof and satnav. The sales guys knew those things weren't selling points for me so I was able to bargain the cost of both down to around $400. I have to say, the VW integrated satnav is the BEST satnav I've used. No it's not on the windscreen but there's also turn by turn displayed in the MFD at the same time. Having had it, I would say it's the only manufacturer satnav I would say is worth ticking the box for if you can afford it. I sold my TomTom on eBay to some sucker for $250 as well!

As for LCT, I don't know what the laws are in QLD regarding leasing but the only extra tax I was liable for when I leased a car was FBT. The LCT is completely incorporated into the RRP of the R36. It's why the CC diesel and petrol models are so different in RRP. The diesel is LCT exempt.

    Cheers

Thanks - Nicely hidden. At the time we took the R36 for a test drive I didn't even think to look for it. I only thought of flooring it

As we wont be purchasing the Sat Nav as factory fitted we have sometime to think about it. We actually won't be taking delivery until Feb.

Just wondering how much they rip your car apart to fit it.

We were stung with this Luxury Lease Tax on our current car so I am trying to keep cost down as much.

    Regards

    Michael

No worries... If you're trying to keep costs down and have a satnav already then I wouldn't worry about getting the factory setup if I were you.

In fact, I'd have been perfectly happy with the car without any options - it's THAT good!
