I think you'll have to go to the dealer with the VIN(if it was a factory install) and/or serial# for the RNS. The dealer should be able to look it up.

You need the serial number and a VW VIN.
VW cannot find the unlock code via serial number. I have just been through this myself. If you know of anyone with Motordiag software, they will be able to retrieve the code for you. There is a post her with details of forum members in most areas that can do this. VW wanted $140 to do it for me.

I'm pretty sure they still can.
I'll find out for sure on Tuesday. Although the diagnostic software has changed in recent years, the interface for obtaining the radio codes is the same.
I've been through this before and they can definitely do it (or used to). Unless the system has changed, they just need to know where to look it up. They should just need the serial# for the unit too (but best to have your VIN also).
They are correct that they can retrieve the code through connecting it up to their computer in the workshop - this is an alternative method. Though my guess is they're just trying to book your car in and bill you for an hours labour. If they know what they're doing it's a 1 minute job to look it up on one of their online systems.

Ok Thanks everyone ill call the dealer on Tuesday and see what they can do ,i dont know anyone with that software. There are sellers on aliexpress that claim to get the pin number using the serial number off the unit but i just got replies saying sorry cant get number for that uint ??maybe because mine is too old ,it was made in 2008.

I the past I have retrieved the code from a very helpful contact at my stealer without any issues, but when I went to do the same a few months ago for a RNS315 I was trading out of my MY14 Amarok for a RNS510, my man told me that VW no longer store these in their system even though he has all of my VIN details in their pewter.
Seems to line up with what a couple of other peeps have also been told.

Cheers dave
I have recently got a number and it can be done with the serial number without connecting to the car, but maybe not all techs now how to do it (or maybe something has changed with the service gear and it is not easy to find any more).

I have looked high and low for a pin for my RNS510. Anyone that can do it in the inner west area Sydney? The stealers keep giving me the runaround. They asked me to email them my DL and rego papers, serial and the VIN which I did and then change their story to bring it in and we will look at it.
