RNS-510 PC video-in with touch screen support

    Hi All,

To celebrate 5 years with my R36 and to kick off the next 5 years, Im going to put in a car PC video/music server with touch screen support!

While I'm at it I'll start looking around for Dynaudio retro upgrade parts and probably fit the reversing camera too since the video module support reversing camera too.

    Video Interface
Car Video Interface for Volkswagen with RNS 510. Buy Online

Touch Screen interceptor (works with built-in touch screen with full operation of existing functions)
USB Touch Screen Controller. Car Solutions Online Store

Inputs: multi video interface A/V input (external video source) × 3
CVBS input (rear camera) × 1
Analog RGB input (navigation system output) × 1
LCD input (car system input) × 1

    2.Outputs: LCD output × 1
    Audio select × 4

    3.Power Input power: 8 V DC ~ 24 V DC
    Consumption power: 12 W, Max

4.Switch input mode Video input mute function: possible to mute each input with DIP switches
Possible to switch video sources with a remote button

USB touch screen controllerr in combination with touch screen panel simplifies user interface and control of various devices. It enables, for example, additional navigation unit or CarPC touch screen control on car built-in monitor.

USB touch screen controller is designed especially for 4-wire resistive touch screen panels. It works with computer systems directly through USB port and supports "Plug & Play" technology. USB touch screen controller fully emulates left and right mouse button functions.

And the N2820 Intel NUC running a customised version of JRiver Media Centre 19.
I already have the NUC running in the car for streaming FLAC, MP3s and SACD ISO's via my iPhone BT using the JRiver MC19 Linux version on the NUC and controlling the NUC with JRemote. I have a video of the NUC I'll post up too.

I thought this was the next logical evolution.

I'll let you know how it goes.

JRiver Id NUC running Media Center 19 with JRemote BT streaming from the iPhone.

If everything goes to plan with the "Beta" testing Im going to put in a car pc with softstart, controlled shutdown and resume from hibernation support.

    Something like this
Fully Assembled Car PC with VoomPC-2 Enclosure, ASUS J1900I-C, M2-ATX-HV automotive power supply

    With this power supply
M2-ATX-HV (140w) Intelligent DC-DC Car PC Power Supply

Looks like a good project, be interested to watch how you go

Can I ask what specific features you want to use from the car PC?

Reason I ask is I have an Android 4.1 system in the Golf which addresses most of the shortcomings of the RNS ie has internet access via tethered phone or USB 3G dongle, streaming music via whatever your preferred service is (in my case from my home NAS using its Android app), choice of nav software etc. Also choice of music app, plays all media types etc etc.

Its possibly a neater (though not as fun) and cheaper solution than rolling your own, depending on your requirements.

I want something of a factory integrated system. I'm looking at a few options for the media player. In a perfect world I'd love to use JRiver but I may have to resort to using the XBOX One Skin for XBMC as its got all the interface stuff nailed for car use that would work with the factory screen and it does most of the media stuff I want too. I want to play MP3, FLAC, and SACD ISOs, MKV and bluray rips from bdmv folders. JRiver does all this but it just doesn't have the interface for it so I'm going to attempt to write my own Windows Metro app front end to JRiver using some of the ideas from the XBMC XBOX One Skin. Almost perfect for car use.

But if you have to switch the RNS input to media to access the external device and for example use Google Maps, and the carPC's media player, aren't you forgoing that factory integration? You won't get MFD nav info for example, unless you revert back to using the RNS's navigation...

Not really, the look will still be factory, and I'll have a full PC to drive from the factory RNS-510 touch screen. Yeah I don't really want the PC NAV, I'm just using it for media playback with factory display. I'll still get MFD integration and steering when controls I hope because the iPhone will drive the playback via AVRCP BT with audio and video coming direct from the PC. It'll be complicated to setup but it will hopefully work like an integrated system.

    OK fair enough.
I was hoping that a smartphone mirroring solution with screen integration would come to pass but that seems to have gone off the boil. Looked very promising.

Subbed to see how this goes, although I've got enough music stored on my phone for now. I'm sure one day they'll have a 1TB MicroSD card

Yeah, just a pain updating with new music (that's of course if you're into new music)
