Lightbulb Reversing Camera for R36 Wagon

    Morning All,

Hoping someone can help out with some advice here. After ordering my R36 wagon in late November, I realised that the MY10 R36 doesn't come with the reversing camera as standard when ticking the satnav option (as outlined in the information on the website!). I got in touch directly with the dealer to see if it was still possible to add the reversing camera to the car and after a week he got back to me and informed me it wasn't possible nor was it possible to get it retrofitted at the dealership. I've seen reversing camera kits available for retrofitting to vehicles and my question is, has anyone here added a non OEM camera to their car and if so, how has it functioned and what was the cost?

If anyone knows of a reputable business in Sydney that can do this could you please let me know?

    Cheers,

    Dr Block

I'm hearing you there, and it did cross my mind to do that.

However, that would mean another 3-4 month wait for the replacement car etc, which isn't very feasible as I do quite a bit of country driving with my job.

I'm just looking at a workable solution now and believe I might've found one. Have sourced a supplier who can supply genuine Passat RVC and the installation is completed by FRX @ Caringbah. (have read good things about them on previous threads.)

Just have to see what the price is going to be like.

Hi, I too have been trying to work this out, i recently got my hands on a genuine RVC kit for the sedan to try and retrofit to the wagon and it was not successful at all. We really need to get the part numbers required for a full retrofit and do it.

Ive now tried two options and they have not worked, the full retrofit seems to be very hard due to the guidance lines.

for now im happy sticking with what i have.....

oK...I wonder if the sedan kit is different to the wagon?

It frustrates the hell out of me when dealers don't even know how their cars are configured and as a consumer/purchaser you find out the information from great sites as this and YOU inform THEM and then they can't help anyway!

The controller is the same on the Passat sedan / wagon, along with how it connects to the RNS510, and the camera is the same - but importantly the way the camera is mounted is different.

The Passat 3C sedan is not available ex-factory with a RVC, but the CC is. The CC's camera is mounted in the badge / boot opening mechanism, and it can be made to fit the 3C sedan but it is apparently a big job. I have the controller, and some of the wiring, but not yet the badge / camera. This setup has the additional complication of needing to have the badge wired so that it 'opens' when you select reverse... this is what I am aiming to do on mine.

Also the Passat camera is a composite signal that requires the controller. You can alternatively fit the badge / emblem from the Golf - that is an RGB camera that connects directly to the RNS510 with no controller unit. Same badge fitment issues though. This setup loses the moving steering angle lines.

On the wagon, the camera device is the same, but it is not mounted in the badge but in the handle for the tailgate. There are also I believe a couple of varieties of the mounting plate, some that don't fit some cars...

So there is no sedan 'kit' as such... and even on the wagon it is not a simple job.

    Hi Swallowtail,

    Thanks for the reply.

    I'll just pop a link for the RVC that i've found;

    http://members.optusnet.com.au/auspacks/vwcamera.html

They then recommend FHRX studios from Caringbah for the installation. Once I get my R36 in March, I'll give FHRX a call and discuss with them.

    Cheers,

    Dr Block,

Have you been given a build date and delivery date?

If they haven't built your car yet, why can't they amend the order?

    Hi Dr. Block,

The Passat camera (in your link) looks like the camera Volkspower discussed with me over the phone today.

It is certainly cheaper and apparently easier to fit then the flippy badge camera.

Do you know if it is composite (and requires the controller keeping the steering angle lines) or RGB (and requires no controller but looses the steering lines).

    Thanks,
    Geoff.

Once i've got my car here i'll look into it more closely. I put the link up so others can look and comment or help anyone else out in my predicament.

    Cheers,
