I'm not quite sure what you mean by "useless in an emergency". if your life is hinging on a warning triangle I think that there is something wrong.
Mine looks like this and I think for $10 and with a usage rate of once per 10 years or so, I'm happy to chuck it out after every use. It's imported by Whites Wires (who seem reputable) and has the E in a circle mark on it.
I guess if it was something you know would be used regularly, then a 350% premium would be worth the spend, but you know how my mind works...... "Even a cheap crappy triangle is an improvement over what most people have in their cars."A warning triangle that meets the UN-ECE 27R requirements will have
- An inner florescent triangle for use during the day with the reflector for night time use.
Check?
- Watertight reflector, the cheap ones are not watertight and as soon as water enters the area behind the reflector they stop working - 100%.
Quite probably. If it rains I'll get a new one
- A design that allows it to remain standing even with trucks passing them, the cheap ones fall and this renders them useless or even a hazard.
Four legs at the corners, each 400mm long. Looks stable to me
BMW sell some cheap ones for under $20 in a plastic bag that meet all the requirements and for around $35 you get a plastic case.
