"Volkswagen owns: Audi, Volkswagen, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini, and overseas SEAT and Skoda" according to http://blogs.consumerreports.org/car...owns-what.html as at June 09. Borrow a bit from here ... a bit from there ... makes for some interesting things out of the factory ...
There's actually a lot of sharing that goes on between the VW owned marques. I have sat in a Bentley Continental GT and Lambo Gallardo and could definitely see the a lot of familiar Audi switchgear lol. OK, the Continental has acres of wood and leather (that the humble A4 cannot compete). And the Lambo has some unique switchgear, but it really is amazing how many similarities there are. Look at the Veyron's cockpit and tell me there are not traces of VW there! Chassis/engines... same. How similar is the R8 AWD packaging to the Gallardo? Doesn't the S8 have a de-tuned V10 Gallardo engine? Doesn't sat nav look identical across these cars? Go and sit in some of these cars at the next motor show and tell me if I am wrong.
Actually for me, its one of the reasons I reckon VW is one of the best value brands on the planet at the moment. Given all the R&D that they spend at Porsche, Audi, Lambo, Skoda (yea even skoda I believe) etc, some of the best technology has to be filtering thru onto the humble VWs. If they get the "reliability" part of the equation right, they could become unbeatable.
