On the level of equipment, the Passat wouldn't be far behind either. But for the Audi it has the badge, it has an interior that's levels ahead and it is also quite ahead in refinement. It really depends on what you value in these cars!
Have a look at the options list for the Audi vs the R36, it would cost a small fortune to option the Audi up to the same levels of equipment that come standard.
The A4 is smaller too, the Passat is meant to compare to the A6 in size, whereas the Jetta compares to the A4.
I love A4's, but they are expensive and depreciate like bastards.
