Ops...not good, more like a DSG issue.
Hi everyone,
After 5 years of faultless running since new, today I had my first major mechanical.
Our R36 has now suddenly developed grinding and clicking noises while under load, particularly accelerating in lower gears on way home today coming off freeway. Also developed a whining noise on deceleration / downshift. The car then dropped itself into neutral with flashing D1 on the instrument cluster for 20sec before re-engaging drive. Babied the car the short distance back home with ongoing grinding noises and somewhat delayed up shifting compared to what I'm used to.
The car will stay garaged until I can hopefully get it looked at with VW next week. I was wondering if this is a classic DSG problem, and if anyone here with similar problems can advise what will need to be done to get back to happy motoring again
Thanks everyone for your help!

Was feeling that it was going to be the DSG... Just a bit shocked as there were no prewarning signs... The gearbox has been perfect until today :0 what is likely going to happen when VW has a look at it.... DSG replacement? Could anyone advise what the likely $ damage will be? Thanks for everyone's help!
If you've owned it since new, and have good service history with the dealership, push hard for goodwill assistance.

I've heard of horror stories of up to AU$12k for a brand-new-in-the-box DSG... scary at the very least...
2009 R36 Variant - Icelandic Grey - HALDEX Gen 4 Controller - SuperChips Tune - CAI - Full LED Install - OZ Racing Vittoria 18x8 wheels - VWR BBK & VWR 2 Piece Rear Rotors - KW V3 Coilovers - KR Sway Bars - CPC DSG Tune - Carbon Fibre Front Grill - SprintBooster - DynAudio Upgrade - Tinted Rear Lights - etc, etc...
Thanks Umai. Yes, first owner. The car has been serviced as scheduled through VW dealer network, including the last 60k DSG service. Would u be able to advise how much I should hope VW to assist with? Timlin If it hits $12k out of pocket.... Don't want to think about that pre-Christmas would really wish to get the car back to normal as it's still a helluva all-round package with no direct contemporary replacement I can think of.... Anything else is either smaller / slower / different quality or price league. But $12k....

In your situation, they're very likely to wear the whole lot.
Worst case, you'll probably have to chip in for labour, which won't be all that much. Maybe a day's work, tops.

Umai thanks! Just restored my Christmas! We've never needed to make any claims on either of our VW's. hopefully VW will look after us.

How many km's on the clock now?
When i was looking for an R36 I found what I thought to be a reasonably cheap MY2010. Turned out it was bought by the dealer at an insurance auction. Initially it had been flooded with water to about 2cm deep in the foot wells. Insurance replaced all the carpets etc. and the owner got it back. As water had apparently got into the DSG his local Subaru dealer flushed and replaced the gearbox oil. The wrong oil
was used and a little while later things started to sound clunky. He took it to a VW dealer who told him the DSG was knackered. Another insurance claim was made and the quote to replace the DSG was $23,000!! The insurer then wrote it off and it went to auction. I heard a dealer bought it for $3,800 and spent about $5,000 on the DSG, then put it on his yard for sale. It sold for about $25,000. Don't envy the new owner who probably knows nothing about the history.
