    R36 Diff Replaced

Hi Guys, i have not been on line for many months but i thought i would share a recent mechanical issue with my R36wagon. Aprox 5 months ago i replaced my standard Conti Sport3 for a new set of rear Michelins only to find that there was what only could be described as a road noise from the tyres (similar to the sound off a 4x4).
After rotating all tyres on the car and swapping all 4 rims from another car so we could isolate the issue the noise was still there. I took my car to my VW Dealership who at first said it wasn't there then changed the prognosis to a loose exhaust baffle, then to a loose drive shaft coupling (which by the way the is a defect notice on this) finally after 5 months of the car being in and out of the work shop the final diagnoses was the car needed a new rear diff at a value of just under $7000.00.

So.. as many cars will be nearing the end of the warranty period just keep an ear out for any persistent noise coming from the rear end. The noise will appear when you decelerate and the load comes off the back and the car levels out.
I got the impression that this was not an isolated case.. Dont get stuck with an issue post warenty...

    Good Luck!!!

i first heard the noise at aprox 40,000 km. I had a VW Bora v5 before the R36 and always thought there was a noise in the car similar to what i had in the 36 but always put it down to tyre wear. It may be an isolated issue but if you have any concerns about a a possible issue get it checked.
