    R36 - Aftermarket air filter

Just after a couple of suggestions on an aftermarket air filter for the R36. I've had one (K&N) in my XR8 for over 13 years and didn't seem to have a problem but I am a little worried about this issue with the oil used in them damaging MAF detectors etc. I think another brand is BMC but I haven't had any experience with anything apart from K&N.
I am thinking of getting one in the hope of maybe helping with the thing breathing but also with fuel consumption.
Anyone had experiences with aftermarket air filters? Advice is appreciated. Thanks guys.

I know GruppeM have a pretty wicked looking intake kit for the R36 but it was a bit pricey last time i looked.
Maybe see if dubbadiction has anything.

As for the filter itself, i haven't ever seen evidence to prove there is any gain in changing the filter type.

I run a K&N panel filter on my R36 and havent had any issues, its been about 18months. I run a BMC filter on my motorbike (GSXR1000) and its also decent.
Just make sure when you clean it you dont leave it dripping in oil.

Did you notice any difference in intake noise with the K&N?

If you use K&N, just make sure you change oil more frequently.
Personally I prefer OEM paper one, just be safe, not looking for any power gain on my R36.

Yeah, I know what you mean. Just trying to see if it makes a fuel consumption gain. Taking the R on a road trip in a couple of months to go skiing so I was interested to see if there was any real gains to be made!

Might need to research snow chains.
There isn't a lot of room on the standard wheels to fit chains.

Yeah, know all about it but im not taking the car all the way up. Only dropping luggage off at smiggins and then leaving car at bottom of ski tube. Was investigating them for our jetta a few years ago.

I had a K&N on my old Mazda Astina V6 for years... No issues, just don't expect the mechanic to touch it (it was never raised with me and never done by them as part of the service) - I did the air filter servicing myself.

Did you notice any difference in performance or mileage?

Don't know mate, never got around to purchasing one so I couldn't tell you. I would only do it if there was a gain to be made with fuel economy. Not really interested in massive performance gains as I know these things are pricey to get any real noticeable performance gains out of.
