    Quick questions: Pending r36 purchase

So looking at joining the r36 community, just wanted a few things answered from some current r36 owners..

What's the difference between red mfd display & white mfd? I haven't driven a red mfd, but the r36 that I might get is running a red mfd. I drove a white mfd one few weeks ago, very nice display, had located/direction on the go and was clear etc.. Any other differences?

Any known/common issues to look out for? (the r36 in question has high kms 190k -country kms)

I've been told that all service history done including the timing chain replaced, any other major things that should be done given the high kms?

I've looked into converting the unit over to RNS-510, plus adding in reverse camera etc. Anyone done this know if its worth the hassle? (or look for one with these options included)

Comprehensive insurance options? Who are people with? Experiences etc?

Thanks for helping out, I haven't looked around the forum to see if there are existing topics on my specific questions so if they have been covered elsewhere apologies in advance.

    Cheers,
    Will

Hey Will, I'm in the same boat as I'm currently buying an R36.
Biggest thing to ensure that the services have been done including dsg ones, Holden etc as this is the most expensive part (refer to my thread and you'll see)
White mfd is a MY9.5+ car and has more menus, and better imo.

I installed rns-510 version e on my passat including 9w7 bt...voice control, navigation, phone and phone book works much better on white mfd....i do not think you can even import phone book on red one (correct me if i am wrong)...this is nice to have but not must have. I order my unit from poland (less then 1.000 au$ invluding delivery, bt was around 310 au$)
Also got full insurace via commonwealth bank ...they are all same. If you do not have problem, everthing fine...but...you got accident, your problems will start
    My advice:
Check car repair history ....also, if you want full mfd integration get car with white mfd...
    Regards and good luck

Pretty sure there was a DSG revision mid-2009 which made the gearbox less likely to fail.

But yeah, white MFD is newer and supports more media modules. The newer.. well MY10+ (I think) got adaptive cruise control as well.

Reverse camera is going to be a pain in the ass to install. Not sure if you've got an RCD/RNS or a basic unit, but if you've got the RCD/RNS unit, OPS will be sufficient for parking.

In the case that you don't have a touch screen based unit and want to install one, it's a pretty easy process. (Heaps of guides on the forum for it).

Might want to also check the front seat bolsters (side parts that provide support), as they tend to crumple pretty easily, although it's not the biggest problem.

RACV was by far the best bang for buck in my case (AAMI was the next cheapest, but I don't touch AAMI or any of its underwritten subsidiaries). I'm 23 as well if it makes a difference.

As far as buying media parts, there's the forum sponsor Audi Upgrades. Bought my RNS unit off him and I've had no dramas at all.

red dot mfd can have phone book but works with less phones. you will need to install an older BT unit. it is a lot more clunky with its menu system.

and you aren't lucky with AAMI no matter what they say. I just submitted a claim with shannons for some douchbag who ran into the B7. completely painless and I am taking it to my preferred repairer - shipstone who are vw accredited and also one of their recommended repairers.

Youi ftw, quick on claims and very competitive in pricing.

Not sure about the 09+ revision on the DSG as my one just had its DSG replaced!

The red is the 08 and 09 model i think, and then white is the later models. I have an 08 with red and after market bluetooth that works fine.

Look for any major work done on the car, like warranty faults ect. Suspension would need an overhaul/replace, check underside of car and panels for damage, and that it has full original spare tyre ect.
There RNS-510 conversion is easy, there is a guy on ebay from Sydney that does it all, and can hook up factory BT and reversing camera, but reversing camera is waste of money. The beeps work fine and save your self big $$.
