Platinum and other plugs with precious metals in them have a longer service life. That's why they are used. You could use cheaper copper plugs, they just need replacing more often.

Obviously, leaving them along is easier on the service centre and customers pocket, until replacement time.

Google would give you better answers on the subject, than opinions off the forum.

Here's mine though. I use copper plugs, tighten the gap over the factory setting and replace them when I get misfires.

Isn't the cost of the cheaper plugs and even through the frequency of the plug changes, overall still cheaper than the cost of the platinum ones through the course of their life?

I run Iridium plugs. They cost about $50/set off eBay (Denso) and they stay in 60-90,000km & look like new when they come out.

Copper plugs are about $6/each aren't they? So they'd need to last 45,000km+.

The best thing about copper plugs is the frequent changes mean they don't seize in the thread.

The Iridium plugs for a Polo are $36 each off VW parts. Presume Passat ones would be a similar price.

But why would you buy from VW when you can buy =/better quality for half the price on ebay?

As for SCA, while they are good for cheap tools, oil & car care products, they aren't a place I buy proper replacement parts from.

Passat08 has a 147tsi I believe. NGK Platinum on eBay are <$70; Denso Iridium (which I've been happy with for years) are <$60

I'd use the correct plugs. They are only about $20 ea. If you are paying for a workshop to change them the labour cost would be about $100 so it's cheaper to use a plug that lasts longer.

I asssume "correct plugs" means long life platinum or iridium? Copper plugs aren't "incorrect" providing the heat range, etc are correct.
