Platinum and other plugs with precious metals in them have a longer service life. That's why they are used. You could use cheaper copper plugs, they just need replacing more often.
Obviously, leaving them along is easier on the service centre and customers pocket, until replacement time.
Google would give you better answers on the subject, than opinions off the forum.
Here's mine though. I use copper plugs, tighten the gap over the factory setting and replace them when I get misfires.
