    Passat vs New Jetta

Hi, long time fan of the forum and now a new owner of a passat wagon picking it up on Friday.

but just read the review on car advice about the new jetta and the prices are good but got me thinking
why buy a passat when the new jetta is the same in size unless you need a wagon of course.

seems to me some models overlap here...

im happy with the passat because i want the wagon versatility but if was looking for a sedan why pay more for a passat
sedan when you can have a gti engine for less money on the jetta and similar dimensions.

    wondering on some peoples thoughts.

not so much in price, im talking about size of the car.
they are so close together that it makes sense to get the jetta given that its alot cheaper...if your are after a sedan that is.

Yeah Jetta is exceptional value for the size of car vs the price but I think the Passat has more technology (most of it optional) than the Jetta.

I'm a happy Jetta owner and don't see the need for a Passat sized car also not a fan of DSG - I like to change gears.

IMO the jetta has always just been a golf with a boot, where as the passat is more of a bigger luxury A4 alternative. This is just based on the mkv jetta, not sure if things have greatly improved in the new jetta.

The SMH article was not a good write up for the new Jetta.
And still no blue motion Jetta.

"The dashboard has a quality, rubberised plastic feel, but cost cutting is evident further down near the glovebox and on door trims in particular. Unfair, perhaps, given its more affordable price tag, but even the similarly-priced Golf’s interior exudes a feel of higher quality."

"The result? A cheaper, scaled-down version of the Passat with a few asterisks. But that isn’t necessarily a bad thing either, as VW now has a twin-pronged attack at both ends of the fiercely-contested medium sedan market."

VW are expecting the Jetta to sell better than the Passat, and the Golf,Tiguan,Polo, and Jetta are going to be its main players from now on according to the boss of VWA...
They have priced it VERY aggressively, and it should be a big hit.

The new Jetta looks quite nice. So why would you buy a Passat over the new Jetta? Hmmmm... let me see:

    1. Why would you buy a Mercedes Benz when a Holden will do?
    2. Why would you buy a Audi A4 when a Passat will do?
    3. Why would you buy a Golf when a Polo will do?
    4. Why would you buy a Polo when a Hyundai Getz will do?
    5. Why would you buy a Passat CC when a Passat will do?

Yes, the Jetta is a nice car. Yes it is ok for 4 people. Yes its a VW (just like Passat). Yes if it suits your needs, buy one.
But as my examples serve above, people buy similar (but different) cars based on their perception of things other than price or sheer space. For example to give some simplistic possible answers to the above 5 above:

    1. Badge snobs and people who appreciate the Germanic feel will buy a Merc over a Holden
    2. Badge snobs will buy an A4 over a Passat (sorry, couldn't think of another reason lol!)
    3. The Golf feels a little more roomier and planted than the Polo.
    4. True a Getz is a lot cheaper to the similarly sized Polo but there ain't any comparison in quality.
    5. A Passat CC just looks heaps nicer than a (standard) Passat (imho - and yes I bought one based on style as well as other positive attributes).

So.... why would I buy a Passat over a Jetta? Have you checked out the differences in interior trim alone? The Jetta's still looks very much like a Golf. The Passat's looks like the Passat CC!
