Thread: Passat TSI Resonance While Engine Revs at 1200 RPM

  1. #21

They all have the same sound level of annoying resonance at 1200 RPM, 2 demo (brand new) MY11 Passat 118TSI Wagon from 2 different dealers, one used Skoda Octavia 118TSI (1.8T, 7 speed DSG, less than 8000 kays on the clock).

Had a road test with a mechanic in a comparison vehicle, MY10 Passat 118TSI Sedan at dealer service dept. That car was indeed quieter in terms of resonance at 1200 RPM and it has done more than 10,000 kays.

Anyway, the customer service at VGA was very nice, polite and patient though. I’ve closed the case with them. Hopefully the resonance would go down below an annoying level after enough carbon built up in the car.

We have a 2008 impreza since new, and it had the same drone/hum that only occurs between 2500-2800rpm. I'm very certain it is a similar issue to that mentioned here.

It slowly disappeared over 30,000km or so. currently at 50,000km, there is no discernible roughness anywhere on the rev range now.

I suspect the resonance is in the mechanicals of the engine/transmission, and the smoothing of the gears and bearings with use has suppressed the resonance.

the good news is, the problem will likely disappear with time. the bad news is it might take a while.

Thanks mate. Is your Impreza a turbo one?

None of the new cars we bought in the last 10 years had this annoying resonance when they were new, from small, medium and large sedans, to compact SUV. They were from different car makers and none of them was turbo though.

The mechanic at dealer's service dept mentioned Mk6 Golf GTI had one 'characteristic' which was rattling noise between 2500 - 3000 RPM. I guess it's the same issue in the link below,

MK6 GTI - Rattle upon acceleration

One of my colleagues' Mk5 GTI doesn't have the same characteristic. We have to live with those kinds of VW's 'characteristics' until VW decide to develop some changes and get rid of them.

Not sure whether it's true or not. Good luck to all Mk6 GTI owners.
