Passat - steering wheel column problem - warning light - key fob will not go in

Has anyone in Australia with a Passat 2006 to 2010 model come across a steering wheel column defect problem. A google search shows that it has been a big issue and there has been a recall in the US -

yeah seen a few of these over here. Steering column lock fails which stops you from starting your car.

interesting - well I've managed to convince my dealer to fix it at no cost even though it's out of warranty!

my view is that this is a manufacturing defect and has nothing to do with wear and tear.

My 2008 Passat wagon TDI 125kw has just started doing this same thing this week. After a few tries, it goes but makes me nervous if the wife and child are out during the day and get stuck somewhere..

My warranty just ran out last month too.....
