They are different models Radio is an RCD510 Satnav is RNS510

Personally I would buy a Tom Tom for $300. Far more up to date maps and a better system.

EG. VW has only just released map with Bribie interchange on it Has been finished for just over 2 years. Been on Tom tom for yonks

VW Satnav says "Stay on this road for a very long time" Tom tom says " Stay on this road for 87km"

Which would you like?? Tomtom is also much easier to use and doesnt cost $3000

Well in that vein you'd be better off with a Galaxy S3 running Google Maps

I still like the RNS510 since the maps are only a button press away, no major map incorrections in my area, and easy destination entry via voice control (also have latest Bluetooth installed). Plus DVD player and HDD for supporting music appealed to me, so don't quite the unit off too quickly, but to each their own.

You can't order a car with RVC without having the RCD510 or RNS510 otherwise there's no screen to display the camera feed. If you already have RVC and RCD510 then there's no reason why you can't upgrade to the RNS510.

Upgrade to RNS is possible, you will need to program the rns with vcds so that it recognises the camera and probably parking sensors that you might have.

Can you actually turn the RCD into an RNS or do you mean you can replace the unit with the other.
I took it the OP wanted to "upgrade" as in software rather than rip out and replace

Yes maybe but can you buy a Galaxy for the price of a decent Tomtom. Admittedly it would be more versatile but he would be better off looking at this thread http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/foru...ive-73179.html

There is a thread in the audio section where you can buy a device that plus in the back of the RCD510 to give it nav capabilities. Interface is slightly less polished though. Can't do a software only upgrade since there's no GPS antenna, etc. Can't find it for you since I'm on my phone typing this (gotta love Swype). Swapping for the RNS510 is the proper way though.

Sorry, i misread that. Normally upgrading would mean ripping out the old and putting in the new as in hardware upgrade.
