Question about my 2007 Passat 103TDI

    Hi Everyone,

I am a first time VW owner having recently bought a secondhand 2007 Passat. I love my car, but I am a little concerned about a couple of things. As this is my first disel and my first dual clutch gearbox, I am not sure if my concerns are legit or if I just have to adapt to how the vehicle drives.

Firstly, the vehicle is a little jerky in reverse. Nothing too bad, but its not smooth.

Secondly, fairly regularly, when I am trying to take off from a stop, I initially wont get much of a response from the throttle for a second or so before the vehicle desides to go. This one is a little scary, especially when trying to enter a roundabout into a gap I would normally have no issue getting into. Its nearly got me into trouble a couple of times now.

I was initially putting these things down to differences between diesel and petrol engines and turbo lag. But after reading a few similar posts regarding mechatronic units and false neutrals I am starting to think otherwise.

Is these sort of things normal or should I get them looked at?

I would term it as laggy takeoff. A DSG reset will probably help, can be done with a VCDS lead from Ross-tech, they have the procedure on their website if you google it.

If it comes back, there's something else amiss. The DSG should be serviced at 60k IIRC.

I also have a 2007, 103 kW, TDI Passat and know what you mean. First time at a round about, put my foot down and not much happened, so I put it further down and nearly went up the back of a Commodore, the shame of it all. Have since replaced the exhaust with an APR 3" S/S system from after the cat back, I brought off eBay cheap and also fitted an APR cold air intake. Finally, the computers for both the engine and DSG gearbox have had their upgrades completed, even thought they where supposedly already done. I know what you mean about it being a little jerky in reverse, I have a gutter to get up and over, but I have learned to live with that. Anyway, after the computer updates, it has all been a lot better. Mine you, the VW computer the chap checked first, info him that all updates where done, but once they plugged the car in, they found out that they had not.

I had a 07 tdi passat which did exactly the same thing. I never fully trusted the acceleration when trying to pull out from intersections... so tended to drive a little more conservatively.

If you do get it serviced at a dealer.. see if there are any software updates as suggested above.

I also find the delay at takeoff quite scary, but assume that it is turbo lag as response is immediate once the turbo has time to spin up.
As to your comments about the DSG: you must remember that the gearbox is actually a manual gearbox with electronically controlled mechanical clutches, not a torque-convertor. I have to reverse up my driveway. If I ease-up on the accelerator while reversing, the clutch disengages and the car usually stops then rolls slightly forward down the driveway until I increase the engine speed. Often it is not at all elegant.

Whenever I come up to a roundabout or intersection I put the tranny back into "S" mode to force it back into first gear, which helps with the laggy starts. Otherwise you get what I call the triple whammy. Turbo lag - DSG lag - Still in second gear to save fuel thing

Yes, VW have been doing this or a few yrs now on all front leather seats both sport & standard. There is mention of this in the manual & other VW literature.
