    Passat R36 security question

So woke up 7am this morning and right outside my bedroom window my car door was wide open....

Looked around, no visible sign of entry. slight markings on the door but i cannot recall whether they were there beforehand. all compartments open, nothing stolen, and the prick left ash all through my car.

Im a pedantic checker that the car is locked. my question is does the car lock automatically after a period of time? i thought that it did (i know i don't have the keyss functionality)

Only thing i can think is that i bumped the key when coming through the front door after a ride last night. again, thought it would lock after a while anyway.

Police are taking prints today, just wish i woke when they did it. can't believe the audacity to attempt to theive outside our bedroom window.

Still doesn't seem to be anything wrong so im one of the lucky ones.

Not sure on passat but my gti will lock automatically if you unlock via remote and don't open any doors after a certain period of time. the only other possibilty is if you left it unlocked by mistake.

Yes sounds the same. im sure that at times when washing my car if i unlock the car and don't open any doors, it will lock again by itself soon thereafter.

Had a scary 'open car' episode myself in the first week with my wagon . . .

Drove to Melbourne with the back full of gear (laptops, electronics, test equipment etc.) and stopped to have dinner at a restaurant. When I got back to the car, the tail-gate was open to the sky!!!

Freaked me out. After my WTF moment and incipient heart-attack, I checked it out and all was OK (luckily had parked in a darkish corner spot with no light fingered people about!). Figured out that what probably happened was that I had somehow sat with a fold in my clothes/key pressed across the open tailgate button (have the auto-tailgate) while eating dinner and the remote control unit had enough power to get through a brick wall and some distance to reach the car (you have to hold the button down for at least a few seconds to activate the open function).

Now, I am semi-paranoid in how I orient the key in my pocket when putting them away or even just sitting down . . .

Like booba and piggy5 say, the car will auto-lock after a while if you unlock using the remote but do not open a door (mine does that). Unfortunately, the power tailgate does not let you use the remote to close it (have to be there in person to press the button).

I did the same from a restaurant through some very thick concrete to the undergroun carpark.. I get back and the boot is wide open, electronics in the back. Very busy shopping centre well lit with cars driving past constantly. Lucky for me, no one has sticky fingers.

    Sounds very strange!

If you locked your car and then inadvertantly unlocked it by accidently leaning on the unlock button of the remote, it should relock itself after a small amount of time if no door was opened within that specified time frame. However, a more likely scenario is that you must have forgotton to lock it in the first place. Then, some opportunist scumbag who patrols the streets at night checking every car door to see if they are unlocked, just by chance happened upon your car and jumped in.

Another explanation could be that you accidently unlocked it at the very moment said scumbag was walking nearby and he took that opportunity.

There's your mistake for a start. The first press deadlocks the doors. The second press turns off the deadlocks (but leaves the doors locked). I have no idea what presses 3 and 4 do, but it's anyone's guess. Only ever push it once and if you are paranoid look for the red flashing light on the drivers door.

Correct - you should hear them disengaging, but you do need to make that second press within 2-3 seconds of the first. If you want to check make sure it has been at least 5 seconds since the first press before trying again OR press unlock, then lock again, and watch for the lights or the sound of the locks engaging/disengaging.
