Tyre Pressure Indicator didn't go off and tyre damaged

One of the front tyres of my 9 month old 125TDI hit a nail the other day (I have done only 5200km). It went completely flat when I noticed the wobbling. The tyre pressure indicator has never gone off. I read from the forum that the indcator needs to be set. I would expect the dealer has set that up when I collect the car! Not happy...

Kmart told me the tyre has too much damage and needs to be replaced and the Continental tyre will cost $488 fitted. Is this a fair price? Any recomendationson tyre dealers?

i'm guessing its a 235/45/17 conti csc2? should be able to get a bit cheaper than that. ring around. bummer about the tyre.

I had a similar problem with a builder's nail in the sidewall of my front left tyre. Beaurepairs said it was unrepairable and a new Conty was going to set me back $400+. The guy there suggested I go for a similar Dunlop which I use as the spare. This cost half as much. The low pressure gauge worked as it should alerting me to the slow leak in the first instance.

the tyre pressure monitor only works for slow leaks as you have to drive for a while at the reduced pressure from memory.
I think its assumed that if your tyre deflates dramatically then you should be able to notice it anyways.

Sorry if this sounds harsh but I don't really think it's fair to blame the dealer. You should NEVER take it for granted that the dealer has done anything.

We are not talking about a $3000 Tata here so there is a level of expectation of service. Besides, there are easy things to check but some are much harder and you do rely on the 'expert'. To the extreme: Have you check your airbag? If it doesn't work when it needs to, I wonder if you will still say the same...
