I'm not mechanically minded at all but it sounds like a belt issue. It could be slipping.
Hey guys
Currently in europe and bought my self a passat.
Everything seems ok mechanicaly except when i start my engine with ac on, the compressor makes a very very loud sqweel of a noise but if i put up the revs it goes away and ac working normal, so i was wondering is this a bearing issue or a compressor issue, as one is cheap and the other is not, once revs are up all is well but if i start the car with AC on the noise unbearable.
Any help much appreciated.

it most likely is slipping, when the compressor is not on its not slipping but the pulley spins still (bels still spinning), but when the clutch of the ac compressor is engaged it then makes a squelching noise, so i am trying to work out if its the compressor or a bearing in the clutch assembly.

It could be the extra strain due to the compressor engaging that is causing the slip. Get it checked out mate. Probably isn't a big issue.
