Passat 118 TSI DSG problems - anybody?

G'day everyone. I have a 2009 Golf 118 TSI with 9 speed DSG. Yes, nine speed as mine has failed so many times that it has grown some extra parts and some extra clutches But it was born with 7 speeds, that's a fact.

I had the engine replaced at 15.000 km, clutch pack once, then mechatronix, then the clutch pack again, aircon leaking from the day one and so on, starter and water pump replaced early on ...

So it's time to get rid of the piece of junk, also known as "my first brand new car". Sigh...

Now, thinking of getting a Passat. Firstly thought of 2L TDI, but the price is a bit of a stretch, so I'll probably settle for the 118 TSI, sedan or wagon - dunno yet.

The reason I thought of TDI was the 6 sp DSG (wet), considering the failure rate of the 7 speed dry ones.

However, it seems that Golfs made in 2011 and 2012 don't have any issues with DSG or engines. Even mine works fine now, after replacing everything except for the button on the gear shift

What is your experience with 118 TSI Passats, any big issues with engines and particularly with the 7 speed DSGs?
Are there any other issues that are not 'covered by Golfs" in the first place?

I have the 118 Golf and borrowed a 118 Jetta while car had a new clutch pack installed. Gear shifts are much more immediate than my Golf and no real lag issues to speak of. When I asked the dealer about this he said it was a different gearbox, even though it's still a DSG7. So maybe the Passat is the same as the Jetta in that regard. If you take one for a test drive you should notice the difference immediately. Can't speak about long term though.

DSG issues here!!!

Have just dropped my girlfriend's 2011 118TSI off at Barloworld VW this morning to get the DSG (7 speed) looked at.
As per many others in the Golf thread's, it is shuddering/hesitant when changing from D1 to D2, and even worse with people/load in the car and much much worse when taking off up an incline.
Car had just under 13k on it too...

Interested to see what the dealer says.


But other than that, great car and cannot speak highly enough of it!

Stretch to the TDI would be my choice. Goes harder than the TSI, and has 6speed DSG wet clutch. Plus stupidily good fuel economy, no matter how you drive it. Probably have better resale too?

Or stretch to the V6, also wet clutch and goes even harder as for fuel economy... umm... move along please... nothing to see here... move along... waves hand.... these are not the fuel economies you are looking for....

Thanks guys, TDI was my first option but the price is out of reach. Even the 118TSI is a bit of a stretch but it's just in sight, so if I go for Passat 118 TSI is the only one I will be aiming for.

Not sure whether to go for wagon or sedan. As much as my wife hates the wagon, I like it just that much

I will also wait until the new ones come in, there is every indication that they'll have SatNav and RVC as a standard equipment. I hope the price doesn't change, though.

Only my opinion + I am biased, have the wagon!

I find the wagon to be a stylish, understated & elegant looker.

To me, the sedan does not have the same 'balance', stance and 'presence' that the wagon does (nor flexibility in load carrying). Sedan owners will probably disagree - each to their own. In either case (sedan or wagon), it is a great car.

If you (and you wife) can, try and have a look at a sedan + wagon next to each other (dealer dependant) - may help re decision.

Price for MY13 passat, no change and satnav, rvc and electric tailgate are now standard. no kessy or premium cluster however boourns.

You don't buy the v6 to save the planet or or keep holes from forming in your wallet.
