one really good thing: it consistently parks the car about 10cm from the kerb so is good for the rims.

I was wondering about this. That's fantastic! Yes, no need to worry about my wife wrecking the rims now! Unless she goes nose in first!

Can't understand why it's not an option for the R36.

I have used this a couple of times now- it works as advertised pretty well.

BUT i reckon it needs an audible gong (in addition to the MFD which does all this stuff) to tell you certain things;

1. its found the spot you can fit into.
2. go from reverse to drive ( after backing into the spot)
3. after going forward and its decided its finished and you need to take over.

otherwise you need to look at the MFD a lot and not whats going on around you.

i used it in a busy street last night ( the wife beside me with her hands over the face!), the swing out at the front went REAL close to a car coming the other way.

she is still too scard to use it .

the gong could be done as a software updgrade so i wonder who at VW would listen ?

It seems VW's Park Assist is more fullproof than the Lexus version

FYI VW is also working on a reverse parallel version for supermarkets etc

Personally I find the Remote Park worrying. What control do you have if a kid suddenly runs into the path of the car? I don't think there is much manual override available from the remote as opposed to a driver in the car. I just don't feel this is a viable function, IMHO.

The driver controls the braking and acceleration it is upto to them to decide whether to continue or not.

I believe it is because the steering is mechanical, not electric in the R36, and so the park assist cannot be bolted on as easily.

Could be wrong, but believe that is the case?

Hi Ben, I just read that the Remote Parking feature (where the driver steps out of the car and allows the car to park itself) can be controlled via remote control. Also there are additional cameras that monitor the progress and changes, so maybe this will be a viable option in future. We will have to wait and see though.
