which oil to use?

ok service is due, what oil should i be using?
5w40 or thicker oil?
engine has done 135,000k's

also to buy a geniune oil filter do i need to go vw? or can u get that cheaper from else where?

mines due for a service too. i also need to know what oil to use, i heard thicker the better......where would i go to get the plugs and filters etc.....tooleys again?
