No reverse in R36 DSG

Hey all, I just picked up my 2010 R36 Passat sedan today. All is going great, love the car and it's a nice upgrade from my old manual Audi A3 Quattro.

I was parking it at the shopping centre today when I tried to reverse in to a parking spot. I shifted in to Reverse, but nothing - it felt like it was in neutral.

I noticed the dash (MFD) wasn't showing any gear whatsoever being selected. I put it in drive and drove off fine, but still showing no gear selected. I stopped, put it in P, then back in to R and still no reverse. Once I turned the car off and on again it was fine, and has been fine since.

Is this normal behaviour? Perhaps (being used to manual) I didn't let the car come to a complete stop when I first shifted from D to R, and maybe the DSG went in to safe mode?

It maybe worth seeing if there are any faults recorded on the gearbox computer. You will need a cable and computer to do this. Welcome to the forum and hopefully, this is just a one off brain snap. I would be happy to connect up to check for faults, but I am in Orange NSW. There should be someone local with a HEXCAN cable and laptop willing to help you.

Thanks all, I'll follow the advice and get it scanned. I'm located in the East - Glen Iris to be precise.

I'm going to try and book it in for a 60,000km service shortly which I'm sure they can do a scan then and there, however if someone is free over the next couple of days to do a scan I'll happily supply a six-pack of your beverage of choice!

was it a dealer used car? personally i would try to sort it out asap so that if there is a major problem you are covered under the 3 month statutory warranty, assuming it was a dealer. i would take it to VW and get them to look at it and if there is a problem get it in writing and take it back to the car dealer you got it from. if a private sale then you're out of luck there.

if in the event that it was simply a loose connection and didn't register that it was in reverse (for your sake i have my fingers crossed for you) then be rest assured that the 60,000kms service will include the DSG service. this makes it a bit more expensive but then you will know that you have a nicely serviced gearbox for the future.

There are a couple of things.

First, you cannot "ride the brake" as having your foot on the brake will disengage the clutches.

Next, there is a delay of around 1/2 a second or more from lifting your foot off the brake to the point where the clutch starts to try and engage.

It is best if you have a conventional hand brake, as you can then use it as you would a manual. If you have the electric brake, then it becomes a little more touchy.

By all means get it checked out, but it is technique that is different when it comes to a DSG.

Thanks guys, haven't had a chance to have it scanned yet but it's going in for the 60,000km DSG service this week so I'll get them to give it a thorough check.

I haven't had the issue happen again. I strongly believe it was because the car was still creeping forward when I changed to reverse and it subsequently went in to a 'false nuetral'.

This is my first 'automatic', albeit DSG. I've always driven manual so I guess it'll take a bit to get used to. All-in-all it hasn't missed a beat since this issue. Touch wood
