New V6 Panamera

Just read an article at drive.com.au, first drive of the new V6 Porsche 4 door salloon.

Obviously the car itself is out of my pricerange, but the article does mention the v6, which produces 220kw
is a VW sourced Engine.

Let me be the first to say it - the Porsche Panamera has the same engine as my R36!!

It sounds a hell of a lot better if you say that your R36 has the same engine as the Porsche Panamera

Unfortunately, almost none of the Panamera's that will be sold will have the NA V6 in them.
Everyone will be going for the Turbo or the S.

hahaha - just like saying the GTI has the same engine as an Octavia vRS... doesn't sound right..

sigh. It's still going to be slow and overpriced for a 4 door Porsche.

If you were going to get a Porsche. Get a REAL one

According to Porsche Australia's web site, the base V6 Panamera has 220kw is claimed to do 0-100 in 6.8 seconds.

Now having driven numerous cars in the Porsche range (I would buy a GT3 or a 911 Turbo in a heart beat if I had the budget for one), I find the above numbers just plain uninspiring. I mean my CC V6 also has the same power (220kw) yet is claimed to do 0-100 in 5.6 seconds (and is certainly feels like that!)

Factor in the fact that (imho) the CC styling looks better than the Panamera, and you would wonder why anyone would buy the (base) Panamera.

However....

I have actually seen a Panamera up close and personal. It looks far better in the metal and the interior is absolutely sumptuous (particularly by Porsche standards). And for a Porsche, its practical (Cayenne aside).

Is it good value? Er, no. Not in the same way that the afore mentioned GT3 and 911 Turbo are in their own segments. Or even a base 911 for that matter.

But yea the numbers don't tell the full story either.

However, for me, I am really happy that I still have a (far cheaper) car that can be spoken of in the same breath as a Panamera!

A bit off-topic, but quite often when I drive my car I think that it drives very similar to a 1982, 928S I owned a long time ago.
It says a bit about the way the 928 was built for those days. It's handling wasn't as good as the R36 (obviously due to becoming a 4WD when pushed hard) but cruising and acceleration were similar.
It also says a bit about the 3.6V6, as it performes similar to the V8 of those times. Good job VW!

For years, funnily enough, I aspired to buying a used Porsche 928S4. I almost bought one but was scared off by a few obvious electric problems of a few examples I as looking at (eg on one car I looked at, only one headlight would raise!) I still see them on the road occasionally and I reckon that their styling still looks amazing today. Thats the most surprising thing about the Panamera. Why couldn't it look half as good as the timeless 928?
