Too soft as in they wear out too fast?
I can relate - my grandad used to buy tyres, then leave them under the house for a while so they'd harden up so they wouldn't wear out as fast. Not sure if it worked, but he drove a Bug, so the madness is acceptable...

Yeh got about 30k out of the set of Bridgestones. Doesn't help when all the drive is through the front tyres and you got to be easy on the throttle.
Anyway would love to get a set of softer tyres but not on the daily driver. Plus i wouldnt consider the ol diesel a 'performance' car as such.
Be nice to have the sticky tyres i used to have on my Datsun 1200 coupe. They had a treadwear factor of 20. Didn't last too long but bloody hell it was as though it was on rails....oh the memories

I hope to get my hands on my new 125TDI Passat early next month. While this post is talking tyres, what sort of milage are people getting out of the original rubber (17's) and what sort of cost/options have others looked at for new tyres?

    Hi Chook,
My 125TDI has now hit 46K and the Pirelli Rosso's are still looking like they have another 10-15K in them. I am impressed by their longevity, but they are very noisy and make an annoying "weerring" sound when cruising at 70-80km/h. Have had the drivetrain looked at last service (45K) as it has been getting worse. VW told me it was the tyres. Seriously considering replacing soon as most people who sit in the passenger seat ask me "what the heck is that noise?" Is annoying as these tyres look good, have lasted well and grip has been good.
