On Carsales the number of R36 wagons for sale is usually three times the number of B7 3.6 FSI wagons for sale. As both cars were on the market for about the same amount of time it is reasonable to surmise that the R36 was three times as popular as its successor. Aussies love their performance sedans and wagons.

You would think that a 206 TSI (or Bi-TDI) R-line wagon would be a no brainer, even at $70K. But not for Volkswagen Australia who have turned the Golf R Wagon into a limited Wolfsburg Edition. Why make it exclusive? Is it a supply problem? Maybe that is the case with the Passat R-Line. Easier to supply NZ where there is less likely to be a lot of demand than Australia where a lack of supply could be embarrassing.

Where does that leave R36 wagon owners? Either jumping up to an Audi S or RS wagon or down to a Skoda Octavia RS. Volkswagen clearly aren’t interested in the market.

Couldn't agree with you more mate. They're clearly going after the grass huggers. Shame on you VW shame on you! Australia love performance models. Just read what some of your competitors are saying about their performance models. They have all underestimated how well their models have sold and are begging their overseas head offices for more supply. Merc A45 for instance. We want performance, not a bloody 1 litre diesel sipper! Ooohhhh, i feel a little better after that rant, and i held back!

They're probably just looking to sell lots of average cars rather than a few to enthusiasts. Passat is one of the largest sellers worldwide so they're just trying to position it in the right segment to appeal to the mass market. Sticking performance models in the mix just confuses the message to the average consumer.

I'm going to suggest that the CC will be the performance model. They'll probably put the 140TDI and hopefully the 206kW Golf R engine into the new CC. That will be the hero model of the Passat range.

Likely there'll be a Passat Alltrack also but this will just be a jacked up 140TDI with AWD same as current model.

NZ has 4 engine options:

• 1.8 TSI - 132 kW/250 Nm
• 2.0 TDI - 140 kW/400 Nm
• 2.0 TDI - 177 kW/500 Nm
• 2.0 TSI - 206 kW/350 Nm

And 3 trim levels:

• Comfortline
• Highline
• R-line

Given that most of these engines/trims are going to be used across the MQB platform I can't see that the cost of holding spares is going to be that much more/any different. Obviously there is a cost to hold additional model options.

I am reliably led to believe that there is the option of an R line in the Passat. Highline will be diesel only, and comfort and trendline in the petrol Variant. Options on these cars will be more limited than what was available on Mk7. Kind of like the change from Mk 6 to Mk7 on the Golf range. Clearly this must have something to do with expediting the supply chain by limiting the options to "packages".
What I don't know is price, or date....

If past experience is anything to go by VWA will drip-feed new models every 6 months or so. There will likely be an Alltrack and an R-line but don't expect these at launch.

This is my thinking.... At launch we will see uninspiring road rollers as we already know then down the track we may see some excitement introduced. I expect however that by that time many of us may have already have moved on not wanting to wait. In saying that I guess this is VWA ultimate goal anyway having us, the lemmings move up & through VW AG's corporate brands....

Yes they're pushing the Passat owners who want some decent performance to go and buy a new 206kW AWD Skoda Superb - as long as Skoda brings in this model...

Surely Skoda Aus will bring this Superb model into the country. Sticks out like dog balls that VAG need this in their fleet, otherwise expect some serious competition from other non-VAG vehicle brands to now come into play.
