Think I'll stick with my R36.

I reckon it might well add up - We Australians like our go-fast Europeans. Golf GTIs made up about one in four Golf sales in 2013. AMGs make up about 9% of all Mercedes-Benz sales in Australia.

The R36 was immensely popular for the short time it was available, and none of VW's main competitors currently offer any go-fast variants - Subaru has dropped the Liberty GT and all Liberty wagons, and there's no guarantee that the Grovel will arrive with the Rex engine, and even if it does, CVT? Eugh. This is a golden opportunity for VW to corner the premium go-fast mid-size market. If they don't, I reckon they're going to lose R36 buyers to Skoda with their 206kw Superb.

Yeah, with Australia's per capita love of the GTI, R, R36, and BMW M cars and Mercedes AMG's, I'd have thought bringing a hot Passat would kind of be a no brainer.

206kw isn't really hot, though. It's barely tepid.

I wouldn't put too much stock on the amount of power it makes. The Golf R does the ton in 5s flat with 206kw, and the heavier R36 can do it in 5.6s with 220kw. Compare that to a VF Commodore SV6 which takes just under 7 seconds with almost exactly the same power to weight (128kw/ton vs 130.9kw/ton)

Exactly Kleung. The R36's were quick due to the aid of gearing as well. I dont know if alot of you remember but back in 1992 Ford released a weapon of a car that threw the gauntlet down to the v8's of the time. The XR6. It did the dash in 7.8 seconds when everything else was over 8, including its bigger brother the XR8. The reasoning, gearing. The XR6 had a shorter final drive which gave it its zip, just like the R36's i would presume. Funny things can be done with gearing to get something to accelerate quickly.
Just wish they would do it to the Passat!

Ps. My old man had one of those first XR6's, the EB, and it was a weapon of a car for its time. Dad was going to get an eight but the six was quicker os he got that! He then traded that on an EF which to this day i rate in my top five cars that my family has owned.

I posted this snippet in the Golf R wagon thread as reported today in Goauto. Being this is the Passat forum however, forget all else except the sections I have underlined & coloured.

For now, the German car-maker's hyper wagon will be the flag-bearer, with the freshly released R Wagon only available in styling-enhanced Wolfsburg variety, priced from $58,990 before on road costs, but will herald more tweaked VWs. Speaking at the launch of the new Golf R Wagon, Volkswagen Group Australia communications general manager Karl Gehling told GoAuto “we are looking to offer Wolfsburg editions on other premium models in the range,” but a non-Wolfsburg R wagon was also under consideration.

“We would certainly consider it. The interest in the car is good to see and we will investigate if we can offer additional variants. We’d certainly be looking at whether or not we could extend beyond the Wolfsburg edition.”

With a lack of high-performance wagons in the Volkswagen range since the V6-engined Passat R36 was discontinued, Mr Gehling said that the new offering was generating significant interest.

“It’s a special edition with restricted production for the Golf R Wagon so our biggest concern is the number of vehicles we will have available to us. At this stage we have over 300 but we are trying to secure more because we have much more interest in the car. We haven’t had a performance wagon in our line up since the R36. That was a very successful model for us and this is a return to offering that nice balance of performance and practicality.”........

Would the introduction of a Wolfsburg Passat include a performance engine & drivetrain (aka:206kw 4-motion). A light at the end of the tunnel maybe..?

Such a pity that we don't get nice options, would be sad to go from my b7 v6 with lane/side/park assist, dynaudio, electric seats to a golf r with only 1-2 options.

Only one Highline Model listed on the Specification Summary that I got my hands on, & the Alltrack is due in 6 to 10 months, I wouldn't be surprised if they launch the 206kw TSI in Highline spec around the same time. Then they have 5 model variants.

    Can only hope
