That was my thinking too - the film looks good when new, but could yellow as it ages, or peel off. At the very least, the edges of the film will become visible as it accumulates dirt.
I also have my doubts that it will provide much protection from anything much worse than a relatively gentle drag of a piece of cargo. No matter how careful you are, accidents do happen. If your hand slips as you're loading something heavy into the cargo area, it's all over red rover with the film, whereas with the plate, at worst it will scuff up the metal a bit.
Now, the plastic trim on the inside surface of my tailgate has suffered a bit...
Mine has been on for 18months and it hasnt discoloured or shows any dirty edges.
But then I look after it and use the recommended polish on it every month
The older stuff used to yellow but the newer films dont seem to.
Anything will show wear if you drag things across it instead of lifting it in.
