MY11 TDI Wagon Ordered Today

Dealer let me have a TDI to drive overnight. I headed out on a nice bit of road doing 80km/h and reset the fuel consumption and got 3.9l/100km. Drove through a bit of nice winding road and by the time I got back to the dealer with a bit of city driving it was showing 4.7l/100km.

I need a car in under 4 weeks so my choices were very limited. I then drove the TSI which performed nicely. I prefer the TDi as it as some infectious low down torque and it's easy to spin the diesel wheels. Driving the TSI through urban driving I quickly realised it was 40% thirstier than the diesel and over 100,000km this was somewhere like $6000 more in fuel. Somehow paying up front for fuel seems a better deal than out of your pocket at the bowser.

I ended up ordering a candy white TDI wagon with electric opening/closing tailgate and the Driver Assistance & Visibility Package - which gives the camera based Lane Assist, LED tail-lamps, cornering front lamps, bi-xenon headlamps and the LED daytime lights.

Interesting there's such a difference in the level of fuel consumption between the TSI and TDI. I'll have to keep that low down torque in mind when I go for a test drive as it's definitely something I miss going from a V6 Commodore to a Mazda6. Sounds like the TDI is the best of both worlds as it has offers good performance and great fuel economy. A 6 week wait doesn't sound too bad.

The TSI is definitely quieter at idle (it's silent) and after driving both I could live with the TSI happily. But the TDI economy is just amasing and a definite improvement over the past model. The wait for what I really wanted was 5 months, so I had to compromise. The ship docks on 19/6/11

Well my car docked at Port Kembla on 19/6/11 and by 23/6 had made its way to Fishermans Island (QLD). Yesterday it was waiting for transport to Cairns. I am hoping it doesnt take too long. I hate waiting for new cars

I love the diesel torque, do mainly highway kilometres, and are becoming just as anal about fuel consumption as most other diesel drivers. Life used to be about how little time it took to get from A to B. Now it's all about how little fuel one uses.

Over 86 hours of driving, 5160 kilometres and 299.8 litres of fuel over 5 visits to the petrol pump always stopped at the first click, my real life average in the (non blue motion) CC is 5.81 l/100km. 5 visits should average out any pump click off irregularities.

The MFD average over the same time/distance is showing 5.5 l/100km.

To me there seems no logical explanation for this apart from VW marketing.

Distance travelled is very accurate (checked with G-Tech Pro and the 5km check on the Hume Highway)

Fuel is metered into the engine very precisely, I would say pretty much to the few millilitres.

So why the inaccuracy in the MFD reported fuel consumption. Reported 5.5 to actual 5.8.

I'm being pretty picky here in talking about 300 millilitres per 100km (less than a can of soft drink and only 15.8 litres of fuel over 5160 km) but VW is quick to promote such similar small improvements in fuel consumption.

Either way, MFD or actual, I'm very impressed with the overall economy in a car that is always (where possible) driven at the speed limit or thereabouts and not specifically with economy in mind. Great for a 1526kg luxo barge returning 1150 plus kilometres per tank and only 13 tanks of fuel ($1300 at $1.50 per litre) between services.

You will enjoy the TDI. This is my first diesel. It certainly won't be my last unless electric/hybrid technology makes huge advances in the next few years

jetfuel - how did you get your car so quickly?!?! guessing there was a car prebuilt on its way to australia that suited your specs? sweet combo btw. i saw a white tdi wagon with leds and xenons and it looked amazing!

The VW dealer in Cairns is a good dealer, so that helped. It was a car destined for a NSW dealer so it arrived in Port Kembla. I had to be open to colours but I think the white is a nice bright white and I dont like paying for metallic paint. I will post some pics when I get it. Hopefully not too long to wait.

I notice on carsales there are quite a few dealers that have stock

Like jetfuel I'm fortunate in having only a 2 week wait for my TDI sedan. I wonder if both our cars are on the same ship?! I only optioned metallic paint in silver, so I didn't have to go through the rigmarole of waiting months on end.
