Oooh, I'm intrigued. How does this work? Do you mean the SD slot, or is there a separate USB adapter somewhere I can use?

BTW - my RNS-510 is an older 'A' model with a limited 2G SD card capacity (currently running firmware 1200). I tried upgrading the firmware a while back and 'bricked' it. The dealer said it was toast, but luckily Martin at JKU.com.au was able to revive it with some of his RNS magic =)

You need the MDI option to use usb. It's normally installed in the top of the glovebox in the passat and pulls down with a tab that you pull on while you have the glovebox open.
You can retro-fit it if you don't have it.

Was MDI standard or an option on the R36? I have an Aux port in the centre console, but no USB in the glovebox

Depends on the headunit mate. Mine didnt have the rcd or the rns510, hence i have had to retrofit although i need to do some vagcom coding once i find someone that can help. Gonna look at the reversing camera first. The MDI sounds interesting but do you need it to install the bluetooth unit?

No you don't need the MDI to do BT and have the text displayed. Some RNS 510 units wont work with the 9W7 though, or will work but text display or MFSW wont work. Most of that can be sorted with firmware upgrades though, but Im not sure if version "A" units would work at all. The 9W7 "K" version, - 7P6-035-730 K - is the one that definitely has AVRCP and works with the widest range of head units, other earlier version may work with certain firmwares, but the "K" is the safest one to get to be sure.

Over at the gti forums I linked to above you can find out what units it will work with.

BTW Spotify rocks even harder than iTunes radio with the 9W7!!

I can sync playlists and favs on the PC with Spotify or the iPhone spotify app when connected to broadband on the PC or wifi with iPhone. Cuts down on mobile data use. Spotify subscription is fantastic too, can stream and download unlimited tracks and no limit on skipping tracks when using Spotify radio mode. iTunes radio only allows so many skips per hour, doesn't allow listenting to a specific artist or album but Spotify can do all that and Spotify is nice to use and navigate.
The only thing I miss with Spotify is Siri, but then I can use native iTunes with Siri for that with my own icloud collection so its not too bad! Its the best of both worlds.

Spotify also has much better mixes but the gui can be a bit small for use in the car sometimes. Maybe I'll have to get an iPad mini and mount for it!

All the text display and MFSW works with Spotify on the iPhone too! Ill take some video and post on youtube tomorrow.
