    My RNS 510 got stolen

My RNS 510 satnav unit got stolen off my R36 while it was at workshop. An idiot used a screwdriver to remove the head unit and damaged the dash while he was at it.

Already 2 weeks that my car was in for claim repairs, and now theft happens at the workshop while there were workers there!! That's another few weeks..anyone knows if they stock RNS units and dash in Aus?

Not my day! Everything under insurance claim with a police report.

So ppl watch out where you leave your car, they seem to remove the unit in a few mins. Some break the window to get it.
RNS 510 seems pretty profitable in the black market as from what I gather in VW forums all over the world.

Tomtoms are a thing of the past!

That sucks! One of the dealers I was talking to was saying that a few new cars have recently been turning up sans RNS510. He didn't know at what point of the journey they went missing either. Seems they are becoming very popular targets and lets face it, they are held in by 4 screws (after the fascia).

I didn't think anyone bothered with stock head units anymore because of the PIN, but I have to assume that they are relatively easily to recover for those in the know. As for profitability, they go for well over $1,000 on eBay in Australia with plenty of people wanting the upgrade.

Most people of course leave the pin in the car with the service manual ...

Gaahh.. that sucks! Hope you get it sorted.

Interested to see what the insurance company will do with the stolen RNS510. Will they replace it?

Its covered under insurance thankfully. Just the time needed to get my car back will be delayed. The manual was in car so maybe the pin was easily taken down. They damaged the dash while they were at it.

The worst part was it got stolen under the care of the repairer (insurance appointed). I'll be changing insurers after this.

So just a warning to all with the RNS 510, keep an eye on your car at all times. They are worth on the open black market and easily removed.

I guess thats why VW recently came up with a rns screen lock overseas. There was a review recently by Caradvice.com.au on that i remember.

Nothing is sacred..... Was the car in the actual workshop or sitting outside for a period..?

It was in the actual workshop. Happened early in the morning ('as reported') when they just opened shop. Some guy distracted the worker out front while another got in to do his dirty work.

This is terrible that something like this would happen, hope it gets replaced soon. Do you mind me asking which VW dealer?
