    Ipod options

Has anyone got the VW Ipod adaptor for the new MY09 RCD510 radio? The dealer really couldn't tell me much about the functionalliy of the kit apart from the price!

Cheapest option looks to be the $30 buck charger/headphone adaptor and use the Aux in.

What advantages are their if I purchased the VW fitted kit? Do track names etc show up on the RCD510? Can you skip tracks etc...

i optioned for a new single din head unit...superior sound - lost the factory look tho...was necessary for what i have done with aftermarket stereo gear

new head unit has ipod & usb cable (in glove box - full functionality of the ipod via the deck), bluetooth audio streaming, bluetooth phone pairing (including 6 preset numbers in the deck), mp3 & satellite radio (when it arrives here)

...worth the spend, i would look into it

Bumpknuck would you ose all the steering wheel controls ? I have got the RNS510 headunit order for my car and I ordered the ipod option. The old one used to treat the ipod like a cd changer and had limited control over the ipod with no track names etc. The new one that is getting released over here in March should change that (with the RNS510 anyway) with full touch screen control over the ipod and access to all ipod menus (playlists, albums, artists) etc. and display mp3 details on the drivers display and the head unit.

    Hey benno

I didn't order the ipod because the dealer said only the basic functions like FF play etc were available and that the touch screen ipod interaction was not possible. I have the RCD510 which is also touch screen. Do you have any documentation from your dealer which states functionality?

    Cheers

    Hey mate,

On the RCD I am not sure. I had been doing my research on the RNS (SAT NAV) obviously as I had been getting that. I had found some great forums that discussed the sat nav (was a European site) and they talked about it. For the RCD510 make sure that your dealer knows that the new MDI is coming out in March. That will make the difference with the RNS so maybe the RCD will be the same (looks similar to the RNS not that that means much I guess).

The old ipod adapter was a lemon from the sounds of it as I said it looked at the ipod as a cd changer so gave you touch screen control for play/pause next track and previous track. No track names as you mentioned.

Which dealership did you order from ? It seems many VW sales people are not aware of the new accessories/toys coming out in march.

    Cheers

    Hey Benno,

Keep us informed when you get it. I am pretty keen on it if the functionality is there.

sorry mate just travelling around for work right now and limited time. I am getting my car through the Camberwell VW dealership and they are not bad. They certainly dont know everything as this is new for them as well. i should get the car in another month or so and when the ipod adapter arrives and is fitted I can update you on how it goes.

I got the new standard color/touchscreen stereo in my R36 and last week got the ipod adapter. Very disappointing. Only functionality is FF. It does come up with playlist but not the actual name from your ipod. It says CD 1, CD 2 etc. These go up to CD 99 and the playlists don't actually start at CD 1??? Screen doesn't display name of songs etc.

I think the old AUX input is better, particularly as l am running a new Ipod Touch which allows me to easily flick through the screen on it and find songs. Cant do this with the "Ipod input" as it is in the glovebox.

It is also not charging the ipod but this may be a problem with my ipod touch as l have a similar problem with my docking station at home.

My recommendation is save the money and by a $10 lead and use AUX. Hopefully a better unit will come out in the future.

PS Don't get me started on the Bluetooth option l fitted at a later date also!!!!!
