    Or Odessey type people movers - then we'd have a chance of getting sensible cars like the Touran and Ford SMax. But this Passat does look awefully good and since the new Forrester is just as big and tall as most SUVs, there's a good gap in the market for it!

    I think it will be a fair bit more than 2k premium over the TDI wagon.

    It's quite amusing, we've just signed up for a TDI wagon to replace the diesel Outback. The outback is a gem of a car (manual only) but the on road dynamics and poor Yoko tyres really annoy me. That's why I convinced teh wife to go down a peg in height for a more traditional vehicle.

    Oh, and if you think you can simply replace the tyres on the Outback, think again. None of the major player make a compliant (load, speed and size) tyre replacement, other than the OEM yoko highway tyre...

    on the plus side, it has a strong engine, very very fuel efficient, excellent visibility, huge boot and vast amounts of legroom and.. well that's about it.

    Looking forward to the TDI Wagon, and yes I would consider this, but in 2 years of ownership our outback has never really seen mud.. it's towed heaps, and it's had a tandem trailer on teh back pulling a car out of the depths of a paddock.. but that's it...

    the Passat allroader will be a cracker of a competitor to anything else on the market... Premium SatNav diesel outback (manual only) is over 50K... and teh passat interior thumps all over it...
    More opportunites have been lost from indecision, rather than wrong decision....

    +1. We have a 2005 and 2009 Forester. The 09 feels huge compared to the 05 - there's a great market for these 'in-between' cars. The Volvo XC70 gives the more upmarket wagon, the Passat and Scout are fairly similar.

    Interesting to read your experience with the Outback. Subaru seem to have lost plot lately. When I sell my MY05 in a few years I will be sad to see it go. Mum's MY09, meh - it feels like another SUV. VAG has it all over Subaru (and other brands). And that's coming from someone who has lived and breathed Subarus for the past 20 years.

    Before I bought my Skoda Scout, I'd been looking at a MY10 Outback to replace the MY04. My plan was to drive from the Subaru dealer direct to a tyre place and get rid of the absolutely awful (gripless and quick wearing) Yokohama Geolanders. I eventually had C-drives on my MY04 - even the Aspec prior to that was much better than the Geolander.

    Luckily there wasn't stock of the Subaru at the time and I went back to look at the Scout - better looking inside and out (especailly inside) and it's introduced me to the joy of diesel. This Passat will be right up on the list for my next car, as it shoudl have a little more legroom than the Scout.

    When I met the wife and had to upsize from the WRX to a Forester XT turbo (known in the WRX club as "tractors") I also changed out the Geolanders (they really do grip like trough lollies on stainless...!), but not until I took em to wakefield for a laugh!

    Anyhow... I only went to the fozzy because I kinda wanted a WRX that would make it thorough bad farm tracks....wife's folks live on a farm... and the forester was tiring.... high riding cars are neither one nor the other... IMHO (and it is only my opinion) they are a comprimise. You need at least 210 mm of clearance to crest a track crown without decking the sump/gearbox/skidplates whatever and between hilux to landcruiser wheeltracks to run in the ruts, the corollary being a nice low ride height so you dont have stuffed roll centres if enjoy a decent drive up some switchbacks...

    Having a Gap Year!!!!

    Drive.com.au state that it is likely to be released on a 40k price tag.

    However this is likely to be for the 2wd 118TSI model rather than the 4Mo 125TDI that people actually want.

    we loved our 04 outback. but the H6 was mega thirsty. We loved our '06 passat that replaced it, what a great idea to combine the two!
