Running on empty... testing the empty needle.

Not sure about the fuel consumption but i tested the Empty reading...

Sunday jumped in the passat to go from elsternwick to pakenham - about 110 return.

some way down the road i realized the gauge was near empty, and the range showed about 70. I hadnt grabbed the wallet and only had $5 in my pocket.

a quick calculation meant i could make it if i put the $5 in at pakenham. at my destination the range showed 40 before i stopped. needle on the empty line.

Trouble is after i filled up the car showed range = 30! And the needle hadnt moved much.

Anyway as i drove along the range kept building up - got to 70 and i made it home.

Lesson to learn- if you grab the wife's car, take money, phone and credit cards.
had a passat tdi. now mb c class.

Yeah I haven't been on th highway yet.

I also wait to rev past 3k until the oil temp hits 80.

It isn't any worse then my old Prado was so I am not really noticing a financial difference.

Around town i hardly have the chance to rev above 3k to be honest. Not even 2.5k revs at times.

Have you tried changing fuels, either Ultimate it Vortex 98 to see if it makes any difference. B4 I had the R36 I had a Monaro and that used to drink Shell fuel and anything with ethanol in it like you would believe. There was almost a 25% difference with that car, it was amazing.

That said, my wifes Honda Jazz was the opposite, It used to get at least an extra litre / 100km when NOT using BP or Caltex fuel.
    Gone...........R36 Icelandic Gray Wagon

FWIW, weekend just gone I did the following trip...

Canberra to Kent Street, Sydney via Nowra (from Sutton Forrest through Exeter and the Kangaroo valley) and back the same way.

Average fuel consumption for the whol trip was 9.8 litres per 100km. And that includes a lot of spirited driving (LOVE the drive from Exeter to Nowra).

Average fuel consumpltion for just the dual lane Hume Hwy /Federal Hwy (Canberra to Sutton Forrest Shell/Mcdonalds and back) was 9.0 litres per 100km.

Any time you want to go to....... Say Berry, for a pie, just let me know...

It's such a quiet piece of road too (from Sutton Forrest McDonalds to Nowra) and as long as there's some hair on ya balls, if you come to something slower you can usually get by pretty quick.

On my spirited drive day through NSW & VIC Snowies (see my road trip thread), I averaged 16.1L for the ~917km day.

Yeah, that is one of the best drives in Australia. I went on it for the first time a few months ago and loved it.
