be funny to see people actually trying to do it and running out of petrol in the middle of bankstown.

we have also recorded around 5.5l /100 recently melb- lorne-melb. even managed a speeding fine on the geelong road ( my mate was driving and enjoying it all a bit too much). its a 340km round trip. the guage was still 3/4 full. he was suitably impressed- he has a mr. bishi outlaw and reckons he would have got 10-11 minimum.

Not as impressive is my merc: around town its about 9klm/100 and on a trip i've managed as low as 6.8/100klm. admittedly is a 6 cyclinder but i was expecting a bit better considering the passat at 1580kg and the merc 1700kg.

    Anyway ... .

    Seeya,

So am I, for a few reasons..

    1) I've easily done Sydney-Melbourne on one tank in older models of that brand. I've also done Brisbane (Chapel Hill) to East Maitland via the New England Hwy on one tank.

    2) I've never seen a 900km distance sign between the 2 (although it wouldn't be far off - according to whereis.com http://www.whereis.com/?id=11CB33A6A2007B it's 881km).

    3) The road has been improved considerably over the last 20 years, so there's a lot more consistent freeway conditions, and no need for stop-start through various towns along the way (eg Albury, Goulburn, Yass, and Sydney via the M5/M7/M1). Also the new alignment is, in general, easier than the old (just compare some of the new grades with the old alignments in places) This will improve economy as well.

    4) It's not as though they've suddenly reduced the tank size from 75l to, say, 45l.

    5) In my Passat, I can easily get from Newcastle to Melbourne, and have a couple of days worth of fuel in the car, without driving like Grandpa.

Of course, I've only driven Newcastle-Melbourne about 40 times in the last 10 years...

    Thumbs up

Over the last 5000km my 2008 103 TDI has averaged 5.7 l/100km with some pretty mixed driving (includes a run from Nowra to Melbourne as well as the daily short trip to the post office for the mail). Always fill on Caltex because of the Star Card

    My car has averaged 12.3L/100

Not bad considering my lead foot (only about 1L worse than my MkV GTI was)

    2009 R36 economy

OK folks, here are my numbers:

    Model : Passat R36 sedan
    Year : 2009
    Mods: Nil
    Fuel : BP Ultimate (mostly)
    Period Apr09 (new) - Current
    Location : Melbourne inner urban

    Total fuel used 1184.6 litres
    total kms travelled 8962 km

    Using this to calculate economy....
    lit/100k 13.22 lit/100km

Note for each fill I record average speed and economy for the tank load (before resetting). Average speed is a strong correlator to economy. Below are the averages of the averages for all tank loads to date.

    Trip computer:
    Ave Speed 37.70 km/hr
    ave econ 12.65 lit/100km

Note as my fills are usually quite similar (about 55 litres) the averaged averages are reasonably accurate.

The discrepancy? (13.22 cf 12.65) - I don't know what the trip computer does when the indicator maxes out at 49.99 l/100k instantaneous. Does the computer keep on calculating the actual economy? Around town in stop-start traffic I see 49.99 a fair bit.

    cheers

The one in my MPS6 went up to 250L/100km instantaneous. I used to see that a far bit too...

I'm a cynic, so I put that discrepancy down to the marketing gurus getting their way over the engineers My transporter is even more optimistic than that.

I'd expect it to keep recording actual consumption and distance travelled, so the total should still be as accurate as they want it to be. Same thing when you are stationary and the display switches to litres/hour. My Transporter maxes out at 99.9l/100k, but I usually only see that in 1st gear with a cold engine (very low road speed being the major factor - I drive cold engines gently). I must have a look at what my Octy MFD says when I give it a bit (I'm usually concentrating on the road and traffic ahead at that stage)

    Just an update to this.

I've done 500kms on a full tank with Shell V-Power with 90% city driving. Not bad i reckon.

I get around 500-550kms per 60lt fill with a normal around town drive. If I go on a trip I will get around 650-700 depending on how fast I go and how close to empty I want risk it.
