    Extended warranty pricing

Hi all, great forum with awesome information!

My new car is about to be delivered in the coming weeks and I'm thinking of purchasing the extended warranty (additional 3 years) as it seems excellent value considering what I'm being charged for minor repairs on my Audi which is out of warranty. The dealer told me retail price is $ 2,200 and was willing to sell it for $ 1,700.

Has anyone been quoted pricing for warranty extensions and maybe share it so we can get an idea of what is generally being charged for extended warranties?
Ps. it's the original VW factory warranty conditions, underwritten by Lumley Insurance, so it's not actually a factory warranty, but still honoured through the dealer who will be paid by Lumley's (owned by Westfarmers) for warranty work.

    Cheers

Be sure you read the fine print, normally to be insured (this is really an insurance product, not a warranty as such) you will need to service the vehicle at the dealership and many things are not covered.

Same can be said of course for VW warranty, but just read the fine print and exclusions before you agree to it.

Generally speaking from an insurance industry perspective, these policies are known as extremely profitable - take from that what you will.

    Thanx R36 Dreamer,

It is a VW arrangement, with VW marketing material (Lumley in the fine print). It clearly states that the original VW factory warranty inclusions and exclusions are honoured. It also states that the car needs to be maintained as per the VW maintenance schedule, not neccesary at a VW Dealer.

Below is from a previous post relating to the Golf/Jetta range.
You could give her a call for a quote for passat.
Are you aware you can take out the extended warranty just before your
factory one finishes. You don't need to worry about it for now.

I'd be unwilling to fork out for it until near the last month of the standard factory warranty. Car could be stolen, written off, or sold prior to that time if things happen, and you'll be out of pocket for the additional warranty cost? Money burning a hole in your pocket? Then put it in the bank for 2 years and 11 months and make soem interest on it to offset the cost in the future.

The only reasons I can think of for buying the extended VWA warranty before the 3 years are up would be :

1 You are going to have driven more than 100,000Km in the three years so your original 3 yrs/100,000km will run out due to mileage (buy the extended warranty before you get to 100,000km). (Of course if you bought a Skoda this doesn't apply, they come with 3 yrs/unlimited Kms )

2 You believe that VWA are either going to withdraw from selling the extended warranty altogether or that they are going to increase the price significantly.

edit 3 There are taxation advantages in buying the extended warranty early (while the car is still "business use").

Otherwise, as others have said, wait until the original warranty is about to expire then buy, otherwise you might be wasting your $$$.

    Thanx all for your advise.
Yes, the warranty is transferrable. The only reason for purchasing now is that I could include it in the lease (business use) and eliminate price increases in the future and difficulty in claiming it in three years on my tax, whilst the vehicle won't be a business vehicle anymore. (I intend to keep the car after the lease runs out)

Then again, things could be different in three years as well. Considering it will only add a few $$ to the repayments I might as well include it and lock it in.....
I'll have two weeks to think about it a bit more....... It does seem good value though.

And the best bit..... I'll be enjoying my new R36 wagon, irrespective wether it's got extended warranty or not...

Ahh yes, having always been a "private" buyer I keep forgetting to take into account how "Uncle Kevin's subsidy" may affect purchasing decisions like this. I'll go back and add another reason to my previous post

I too have been looking on the Golf/Jetta thread at prices for extended warranty. The price for the 2.0 TDI looks good compared to the $1,950 I have been quoted from my local dealer for extended warrany on my 2007 2.0 TDI DSG Passat wagon which is about to run out of original warranty.
I tried the two dealers most favourably mentioned in the Golf/Jetta thread (Southern Classic Cars and Denlo Parramatta) but Jaz has been on leave for quite a while and others have not yet returned my calls.
Has anyone had success in getting anything like the 2.0 TDI price of $1,269.24 mentioned above for a Passat DSG wagon? I'm beginning to suspect that price may only apply to a Golf unless someone can inform me otherwise.
