I had an extended warranty for my Land Rover Discovery. It was purchased through Land Rover but underwritten by Allianz - it turned out to be worthless and covered virtually nothing even though it was sold to me as a 2 year 100,000km extension of my factory warranty.
I sold that car and bought my Passat, and have now gone back to my rule of buying new, and ditching a car after 2.5 years. Others will argue otherwise, and glad that the extended warranties have worked out well, but my experience is they are worthless and I'll never do it again.
NB. The warranty in my case cost me $2,600, and then a number of repairs over time that weren't covered (control arms, seat belt inertia reel, drive shaft seal) came to nearly $6k. So for $8.5k I should have just changed the car over at 2.5 years and wouldn't be any worse off.
