I had an extended warranty for my Land Rover Discovery. It was purchased through Land Rover but underwritten by Allianz - it turned out to be worthless and covered virtually nothing even though it was sold to me as a 2 year 100,000km extension of my factory warranty.

I sold that car and bought my Passat, and have now gone back to my rule of buying new, and ditching a car after 2.5 years. Others will argue otherwise, and glad that the extended warranties have worked out well, but my experience is they are worthless and I'll never do it again.

NB. The warranty in my case cost me $2,600, and then a number of repairs over time that weren't covered (control arms, seat belt inertia reel, drive shaft seal) came to nearly $6k. So for $8.5k I should have just changed the car over at 2.5 years and wouldn't be any worse off.

I have used my extended warranty a few times on my Passat, which is underwritten by Allianz. No issues whatsoever.

Will definitely do it again for a VW purchase, gives me the comfort in holding the car for 6 years especially with the DSG technology.

The nearest equivalent is the VW Used Car Extended Warranty.

It has a $2000 limit per claim, including expenses, includes a requirement to maintain as per the owner's manual, and has an overall claim limit of the purchase price of the car.

It covers you for either 3 years/60000km counted from the end of the statutory warranty if your vehicle is less than 10 years old, or 1 year/20000km if your vehicle is 10-12 years old. In both cases, the odometer must be under 150,000km at the time you take out the extended warranty.

It's also worth noting that the cover is limited to a specific set of parts, so you may not necessarily be better off going for the VW warranty. No idea what it costs, either.

The extended warranty conditions / policies appear to have changed since I bought my policy - at the time (2.5yrs ago) the Allianz version was the only form of extended warranty backed by VWA and it did not have such limitations within the policy.
