I believe the carbon one you are referring to is the Gruppe M intake.
These get quite a good rep however i am not sure of the legalities in some states where it requires the podfilter to be enclosed.
having been asked to write a review i thought i would quickly put up some info about the Evolution Motorsports (EVOMS) intake..
i bought this about 6 months ago from USP motorsport. the price was USD$309 + shipping (a bit cheaper in $AUD given the strong aussie dollar).
I chose expedited shipping and it arrived in about 7 days.
From memory i found maybe 3 or 4 retailers that sell them online however this was the only place that would allow me to order them directly, other required to email for shipping, only 1 other place got back to me with a heavilg inflated shipping price.
It arrived in a medium-sized box. apart from the silicone pipe and filter the whole airbox was disassembled.
it took maybe 1 hour to assemble and came with adequate instructions and all bolts etc.
when all done it only took about 15 mins to actually install and fit perfectly without any issues at all.
finished install pics:
the top of the airbox is "open" with a rubber seal, the idea is that the bonnet closes on top to complete the airbox and act as the "roof" of the airbox if you like.
the standard ram-air feed fits into the box to feed it. it certainly provides good airflow as the box often appears dusty.
the difference?
performance - no significant difference
sound - huge difference. obviously its all under acceleration but i felt that the lovely intake noise was very amplified and the exhaust even sounded a bit different (weird but i feel it is true)
the look - well you can't argue that its a pretty setup!
overall i feel it is a worthwile mod, but from a cost-effectiveness perspective its borderline given that you pay quite a bit for only a change in sound, and that the raw materials are essentially very cheap.
the only other intakes that i know of are the VW racing intake and ther is one other japanese one that is carbon fibre. both a MUCH more expensive.
btw, this intake is sold as "EVOMS V-Flow Air Intake - 3.2L, 3.6L VW/Audi" i obviously confirmed prior with the seller that this fits the R36. in essence any MK V R32 intake should fit too.
feel free to post comments!
cheers,
Warren

Thanks for taking the time to do a review and also for the photos.
Would this fit the B7 Passat V6?
Yes, it's the Gruppe M. I had one when i still have my R36. It does not have any problems with the police at all. I was pulled over one time for a random spot check by a highway patrol car. They looked at the gruppe M and it was fine.
Besides making your engine bay look good, the induction sound it makes when you accelerate, is much better than the stock air box or pod filters.
If anyone is interested, i have it for sale

Thanks for the review Waz.
Im not a fan of the look of it as i think its ghetto that Evom's couldnt add a lid on it and the bonnet acts as a lid - too half assed TBH
I prefer the Gruppe M or a cheaper solution is the new Forge intake that has just been released:
Should RRP around $400
2009 Volkswagen R36 Wagon
1968 Audi F103 75L Coupe
1966 Volkswagen Beetle Deluxe
Its not ghetto at all, in fact its more showy than a normal intake - when you think about it its a fully sealed airbox functionally but when you open the bonnet you stare at a nice big fat cone filter. the best of both worlds.
admittedly the Gruppe M is also very good looking and i would have that in a heartbeat but its too pricey.
not a big fan of the look of the one above - looks like the "carbon wrap" you can buy sheets of on ebay
Excellent review WazR36. Just had a look at the shipping costs from USP Motorsports and it comes to $550! Is anyone else selling these?
