What if the gearbox has lost oil.....thats the only thing with the above methods...you put back in what you got out but is the level correct?? Whats why the level check takes place between 35-45oc in P with engine at idle. ...VDUB..
Hi Guys,
Have been reading up on changing the oil and filter myself on the DSG (08 R36). There are many variations on the amount of fluid to put back in unless you are following the temperature monitor then drain to the top of the level tube method.
Why would one not weigh rather than measure the volume of the oil removed to get an accurate amount to reinstate? If the temperature varies the volume so much surely weight would be a much better measure?
I was thinking of zeroing with my drain pan on the scales, draining and then weighing to see how much. That way it should not matter what the temp is?
Am I missing something? (I do that a lot)
Cheers,
Nigel

Remove the inspection plug, level tube, and filter to drain it.
Refit the level tube and new filter, fill the transmission with 5L of oil, start it up and let it idle until it's up to temperature, let the excess drain out, then reinstall the inspection plug.
That's all there is to it. As long as you've got a way of putting the new oil in, it's easy as. Should take no longer than an hour.
Note: DO NOT REMOVE THE INSPECTION PLUG WITH THE ENGINE OFF UNLESS YOU ARE DUMPING THE OLD OIL.

Ive only ever done DSG services in the dealership, but after talking to a few smaller workshops, they seem to drop the oil and filter, then refit the level tube and drain plug, fill the DSG through the filter hole using a funnel and tube, then fit the filter, start the car up and then drop the drain plug to level out the oil level. As long as the DSG oil is around 30 to 40 degrees the level will be fine.
