    DSG reliability

Second hand information - My wife told someone we were thinking of buying a passat R36 and she said don't do it - she knows someone who has a lot of experience with the DSG gearbox and they have real issues. I have read about the 60k service and I am okay with that provided that is the main issue. Using Google I found an Audi Forum and they are having real problems with the TT and in particular the 3.2 DSG TT. See link

This is interesting as the cars are older than the R36 ie new technology starts with Audi and goes down the line at the VAG group. Has VAG changed the design so this is no longer an issue? Is the car warranty for 3 years/60k?

Is this something I should be concerned about, I don't do a lot of km and I am struggling to find a car that ticks all the boxes like the R36 does. But after purchasing the Megane RS225 I have to get approval of the wife and I don't want a discussion in a few years about "I told you so"

Does anyone have additional information as the repair bills in the UK are very large?

It pisses me off when people make negative comments based on hearsay. The DSG is recognised as one of the most advanced and reliable gearboxes in the world. Even Porsche are now using a version of it in their cars.

The R36 warranty is for 3yrs/100,000km and included roadside assistance with towing and accomodation services depending on where you are if/when you break down.

If you're worried about maintenence costs, discuss it with your VW service department. Service costs are a factor for some people I guess.

Keep the car under warranty and you'll be fine. This may mean extending the warranty after the initial three year period has expired, or selling the car and buying another. I'm not sure how warranty extensions work. Besides, in three years when the warranty on your soon to be purchased R36 has run out, an S4 or RS4 should be a more reasonable price

Of course the Internet is full of people complaining about the DSG. People who haven't had a bad experience generally don't feel the need to let the rest of the world know. The vast majority of DSG boxes are fine. I have one in an R36 and my mother has one in a Golf GTI - they are fine. The Golf is bullet proof - it's nearly four years old and the transmission still works as well as it did when new (brilliantly). The R36 is 15 months old and isn't showing any signs of trouble, either.

guess its important to do your homework before making such a big purchase. Most of the things i have read about the dsg have been positive, the negative stuff seems to be around the mechatronics unit but these have been replaced under warranty and the issue resolved.
Personally speaking the dsg has its quirks, have one in my jetta tsi that sometimes annoys the %#&! outta me, but having said that it has not had any problems in the 18 months i have had it, its more my personal taste in gearboxes than issues with the gearbox itself. they take time to learn to adapt your driving to get the best from the box.

    +1 for the DSG.

The one in my GTI never gave any trouble.

I did have a slight issue with a jerky gearbox in the R36, but VW fixed it and there have been no issues since (seemed to be a batch of cars had faulty Mechatronics or something).

It is the best gearbox I have ever had, and agree that people who have issues are far more likely to complain than happy motorists!

Read a couple of the used car reviews on drive, carsales, nrma etc. none name the gearbox as an area of concern on 2nd hand cars.

    Cheers.

If you are keeping your car for between 3 to 6 years, just budget for an extended warranty (cost about $1500 give or take a few hundred) and get the car you want.
