As an update I have just read in the Courier mail motoring pages that VW DID do a recall on 6spd DSG boxes in 2008/09.

This was in an article about an R36.

    My mistake above maybe.

Here is the recall notice so maybe worthwhile checking

It was just a reflash from memory.

May or may not fix the fault described.

Why do you put it in neutral?

Just an update, had my major 60,000km service done by Volkspower (Melbourne) today which included the DSG service. Good news is that there are no issues to report at all. They did a scan which showed up nothing!

Hopefully we'll never see that issue again!

At lights, junctions etc. Probably something left over from my manual driving days. Do most people just have it on AutoHold or foot on the brake?

Foot on the brake for me as if I use auto hold and lift foot off the brake the engine restarts in my model.

Autohold for me. Taking a while to get used to as this is my first auto, but it's pretty impressive and saves whacking it into neutral at the lights

Why don't you drive it like the clutch less manual it is?
Leave it in gear when you stop at the lights, foot on the brake (press twice for hill autobrake if you like, but keep your foot on the brake.
When the lights go green, foot off the brake and gently onto the accelerator and drive away.
No shudder, no 'not engage' issues and smooth, safe driving.
IIRC, if you use neutral each tone you stop, you actually confuse the computer. Might wear it out faster too?
    Cheers

Autohold saves you having to hold your foot on the brake at all when stopped. Very handy particularly in peak hour. Every car should have one. This is regardless of whether you drive the car in auto mode of manual.
