Do i need to use vag com after installing HID'S

I've been wanting to install HID's on my car and i have been doing alot of research, one thing that bugs me though is that people say you have to use vag com to enable bi xenon shutters and disable DRL's. Do i need to do this? My australian 2009 passat 2.0 tdi does NOT have any DRL's, and cant i just buy a canbus and error free hid kit? I really dont want to use vag com as it is expensive and i doubt anyone has it in my area (Melbourne, Australia) Here is a kit i was thinkign of getting :http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/H7-35W-60...17c2de4&_uhb=1

Welcome to VWWC. As I said in your thread over at Whirlpool, to do it properly you will need a new set of housings, a new bumper with the popup-washers, and VCDS to program them correctly.

Your Passat does not have the shutters because your headlight housing has a separate reflector for the high beam, as opposed to bixenons which use a single bulb for both high and low beam.

You seem to be determined to do this on the cheap, and purely for cosmetic reasons, so inevitably you will end up with a sub-par solution. Based on your posts on whirlpool you've already ignored everybodys suggestions already, and wasted money on at least two sets of 'blue' halogen bulbs that you've ultimately been unsatisfied with. If you fit HIDs without also fitting HID-specific optics, an automatic self-levelling system and a washer system, your car is unroadworthy.

I'd suggest you read article this carefully to see why you need HID-specific optics even though your car already has projectors.

Aside from being hugely inconsiderate to other drivers, you risk having your insurance being invalidated due to having an unroadworthy car. As you've posted on Whirlpool, you're young and don't have a lot of money to spend - so save up and do it properly, or replace your car with one that already has proper HIDs fitted. Don't shortcut it at everyone else's expense.
