Only downside is you pretty much have to use AAMI assessors and repair shops.
Not quite. AAMI assessors yes, but if you know how to do it, you can quite easily use your own preferred repairer. If you look at the AAMI policy documents, you can put forward a quote from your own preferred repairer, and as long as it's competitive, AAMI will usually approve it. The bonus is that you'll get a lifetime warranty on the repairs regardless of whether your repairer is 'AAMI approved' or not.

I'm not the only one that got that sort of quote. Deano646 got the same figure, but he's a bit older than me. But yes, I've been with AAMI for ages - almost exactly 10 years, as it turns out. 4 years with a VS Berlina (2000-2004), 6 years with a Honda Accord Euro (2004-2010), and now with the R36.

Throughout that period, AAMI have been consistently the cheapest. Bizarrely, the Accord Euro costs more to insure than the R36, at the same address with the same driver. Go figure.

Somehow I think there may be an anomoly in the AAMI system - not that I am complaining!!

I haven't had a car insured with them for some years as I have driven company owned vehicles so this would be my first vehicle policy in about 15 years. I do have my house insured with them and I think it helps.

I could not find an alternate policy below $1,000. Maybe it has something to do with how AAMI 'view' the R36?

MY10.5 Passat Wagon TDI (agreed value $55k to cover all the ordered options) carported in Melbourne suburb.
    Which company? AAMI
How old are you? 45 (rating 1)
    Premium a year? $816
    Excess? $550

This premium is probably a little higher than normal since there is 3rd party interest (Novated Lease).

Exactly - people write off AAMI because they think you are forced to do exactly what they say - where in fact they are just a flexible as everyone else - and both times I've had to deal with AAMI assessors they have been nothing more than extremely helpful.

Well, actually, this is exactly what they say in their policy documents - you can put forward a quote from a repairer of your choice for consideration. If it is the most complete and competitive quote, it will be approved. There seems to be a misconception that you don't get a choice of repairer with AAMI.

And the fact that they're consistently the cheapest for us is a bonus too.

I've always had nothing but positive experiences with AAMI too. Always helpful and easy to deal with. They even helped me out with some helpful advice earlier this year when my father had a not-at-fault accident in a friend's uninsured car. And before anybody asks, yes, we did ask if the car was insured before borrowing it. The friend just made an honest mistake and had allowed her insurance to lapse accidentally. She was overseas at the time, and we were looking after her car for her.
