Coolant disappearing causing coolant warning. Type 3c TDI dsg 2007

    Help,
Not sure if I am in the correct area, first real post.

For the last 6-8 months we have had the coolant warning coming on due to "low" coolant (coolant was low). But no leaks to be found. Have had vehicle back to dealers number of times with no luck in finding "leak". Last week same thing, we had the vehicle back to the dealer where they have replied with:

"Investigations carried out when the vehicle was booked into the workshop indicated that there was no external coolant loss. The vehicle needs to be stripped and inspected. The possible cause for the coolant warning light is a faulty Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) cooler.
We will need the vehicle over two days to get the repairs carried out."

Is this correct? Does coolant go through the EGR and could that be the problem? There is obviously coolant loss as I'm having to refill the bottle everytime the warning goes off (this time 6 weeks after VW filled it). I would appreciate any advice as I'm wondering if they have gone into "guess mode".

    Many thanks in advance.

The EGR has it's own cooler, so as to not to melt nearby components, and to promote faster warm-up.

They will most likely put a pressure tester on, with the EGR removed, but with the coolant hoses still connected. If that's ok, there's always the engine oil cooler, DSG oil cooler, and heater core to test.

Loss of Coolant with no apparent leaks usually means it's going out the exhaust. Possibly the Head gasket / cracked /warped head??. Had the same problem before, but not on a VW.

    Good luck, sounds expensive.

Agreed.... Had it happen to a 2005 Holden (Opel) Vectra V6 I once owned. Car was 9 months out of warranty so I got rid of it... Just didn't want to know about it, read; cost of repair........ ;-(

Well an update after the car had been at the dealers workshop for 3 days they are still none the wiser. So we have been handed back the car ( no charge as yet - very happy about that) to see if the "problem" occurs again....
