Humour aside.... a mate has the same problem and the dealers replaced the control unit $135 but didn't fix it. There is another module (can't remember what its called) but that costs about $240.

Is there a reliable fix or is it a quirky thing that volkswagonists learn to appreciate

Could be the hazard switch. This also incorporates the relay that makes the clicking noise.

Or, the stalk itself is showing signs of wear. Wiggle the stalk up and down gently and see if it makes the noise.
