    Cargo Barrier/partition for MY10 Wagon ???

    Hi All,
I've just placed an order for an R36 wagon and after sealing the deal remembered I really should install a cargo barrier ( the metal framed ones) - first wagon so never thought about it before. No good having all the air bags if it's the loose can of baked beans that does you in.

I've tried sourcing one in Aus but it seems both Milford and Ausguard do not manufacturer one and the VW dealer has never heard or seen one for a Passat.

Does anyone know whether it's possible to get one for an MY10 wagon? I can't be the only one out there that wants one. I've seen these ones available in the US which would be perfect - no drilling necessary.

Any help or directions on who might be able to help would be much appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Paul

    Hi Paul,
    Congratulations on a great choice!

Keep in mind that the metal barrier might prevent you to fold the rear seats flat and load large items unexpectantly. The standard luggage cover is not bad and is designed to hold most items secure as long as they are not too heavy, especially in combination with the secondary vertical barrier that comes standard. Maybe have a good look at the standard items (if not done already) and then reconsider wether you still need a metal one.

Thanks! I'm still coming to terms with the extra $14k over the Liberty GT Premium it's cost me, but then I'm a tight ar$3. I think the value is there though.

I only saw the horizontal blind that covered the cargo area, I wasn't shown any "secondary vertical barrier". Is there a picture of this anywhere as it may well be the answer I was looking for!

Regarding the metal barrier, the one I linked to and available in europe and the US is a half barrier leaving the lower section and ski hole clear, plus it simply locks in using the rear seat side latches. That way if you need to lay the seats down the guard can easily be removed.

    Cheers,
    Paul

    Paul,
I looked at an Outback few years ago now, but it just felt too plain with dissapointing engine performance and ended up buying an Audi. Subaru's are nice but a bit too common nowadays, plus the fact that the current R36 is likely the last with a big 6 cylinder petrol with VW's trend in downsizing. I also really like the engineering that has gone into the cargo barriers in the VW wagon, very clever system!
PM me your email and I'll take some pics now and send them to you if you want.

    Cheers

Paul, you do not need to buy a barrier. the R36 has a secondary vertical barrier which connects either side near the roofline to block the rear from the front.
It's flexible material but seems very strong. When the seats are folded flat the barrier can insert into the back of the rear seats just behind the front seats and block off everything behind it.
You should go to your dealer or a dealer and check out the features, you'll be surprised at what comes standard.
BTW - I came from a Subaru 3.0RB and there is NO COMPARISON AT ALL. In every way that counts the R36 will dump on the Subaru from a very large height (except reliabilty if you're unlucky, Subaru's are incredibly reliable, VW's appear to be hit and miss)
    Enjoy !

    GWH,
Maarten kindly sent me some photo's of the barrier and you're right it looks strong enough. I did ask the sales guy about a barrier (although I think I did say metal barrier) and he said there was an aftermarket one available. Thanks for the re-iteration. Would have been nice of him to have also mentioned the already existing flexible one though....

Hopefully I've got a reliable one then! 2 subies and never had an issue with either of them, so kind of used of the issue free driving. Same can't be said for the VY ute.....
    Cheers,
    Paul
